Good luck everybody! Weather is looking A-OK in western Oregon. Am getting ready for the 50 minute sprint north tomorrow early, early in the morning with a ton of family. Then it's hurry up and wait...and hope I have the settings set on my camera correctly.

As this undertaking involves no water, my chances are above average.

I'm rather disappointed with this "US Centric" challenge, but I wish you to have fun with it

It's an EXTRA challenge, Alex! It's not replacing anything else in a scheduled slot. Besides, you're creative enough to stage your own eclipse with available resources, surely? I challenge you to it! :-)

Pretend you're using the old, familiar advanced rules except forget about "major" vs "minor" elements and you'll be fine. You can clone out anything these days in Standard Editing. Textures are in full play too, though I doubt that will interest you for this shot.

HDR composites are good? I'm probably aiming for something like this. If it works with the rules, I'll submit a shot. :)

Alright now...I'm doing some test shots and I can't seem to get it right!!!

I have

Nikon D7000
Tamron 150-600mm (longest focal length)
Solar Film (attached to the lens)
F/8
1/1000 sec

I've tried

Manual - nothing black screen can't find the Sun
Aperture - speed is to long (bouncing Sun)
Speed - nothing black

What am I doing wrong???

I have +9 welding glass, I'm at ISO 100, f14, 1/8000. And my sun is green. And blurry around the edge. I don't know how dark or light it should be.

I had a hard time finding the sun. Had to zoom out find it and then zoom in

I had to go up to ISO 800 before I could get a shot...but I finally have one!!! Evidently my film is VERY dense!!!

I'm not going to enter the challenge with these and since I didn't bring my camera to work today because I didn't have any filters to protect my sensor I figure I'll just post them here for you all to enjoy. Shot one with the glasses in front of the phone's camera and the other without just looking through the clouds.

I didn't have totality here so I didn't think it would make for good photos anyway... Was kinda cool see the surroundings become much less bright. And it did seem to be a little cooler during the time that we had the peak of the eclipse.

Hope to see lots of images. I'm excited to see what everyone got.

:-D Glad you were able to see it. Sounds awesome. Our oldest one went down to South Carolina and he said the same thing.

What surprised me was how much light we still HAD here with the sun being obscured by 83%. Thought it was going to be a bit darker. Barely dimmed.

I am hearing this from a few people I know that either a) traveled or b) lived near the totality line. I hear the time that it was totality was surreal. It was pretty cool to witness even from here in Florida where we only got a percentage. I can only imagine how cool it must have been for the ones who witnessed it in its entirety.
