Soooo as I understand it our Nik software is going to go away at some undetermined time. I'm starting my search now to find a replacement...I'm not sure anyone/anything can replace Nik Silver Efex....

I have been looking at On1 to replace my Nik...but I'm not sure if it's a replacement or not? Does On1 replace Lr & PsCC? I'm not wanting a replacement...but I need to find replacements for

Silver Efex
Color Efex
DFine
SharpenPro (not as critical)

Here is the link/pkg that I'm interested in...

Thoughts???

Fixed Janine's broken link.

I have On1 Janine and it's an awesome collection of tools. I find myself using it more and more in place of Color Efex. I haven't quite got round to using it for B&W yet, I'm so familiar with Silver Efex, it's like a pair of comfortable slippers, I can't quite bring myself to give it up (indeed there is no reason to give it up until it will no longer work).

So what do you think about the pkg? And do you still have Lr & PsCC?

Yes, I have both LR and PS. I confess to not being a fan of LR, so use my old Apple Aperture still and will continue to do so until it no longer works, once it doesn't work, then I will most likely use Capture 1 for organisation. I don't use PS very much anyway and can quite easily see that the On1 package could replace the need for PS for my limited use. It clearly is not going to replace PS for all those folk who do fancy and elaborate composites etc but for my needs, I think it's more than enough. It's actually quite sophisticated and it is evolving all the time.

I don't know much about On1's pkgs...does this look like a good one or is there a different "bundle" that's better? The price seems good???

One last thing (haha)...is On1 a plug in or a stand alone?

There's only 1 package as far as I know which is what you've linked to. as it's 99 normally, 49 is good value isn't it? You can get a free version of just the On1 Effects programme but that's not the full programme. On1 acts either as a plugin or standalone (it installs both). The videos are supplementary so to get those included is helpful.

I keep thinking of questions (probably over thinking this...)

Is that price a one time deal? or a yearly subscription? Do they keep up with updates?

I think On1 used to be a yearly subscription and they used to have 2 different levels...one was pro???

bold added by me for emphasis.

It's never been a subscription and to my knowledge there has always only been the free effects option and then the full package. I've had it for years, I think since Perfect Photo Suite 7. They do frequent updates. I'm sure you'll find the information you need about the offer from their website.

It's a one-time deal. You own it. It's both a stand-alone and a plug-in, so you can dovetail it with PSCC workflow easily. ON1 Photo Raw is designed to replace LR, essentially; it's an organizer and a processor like LR. It doesn't require libraries to view and sort images, which is a plus.

Topaz has a B/W processor that's a decent replacement or alternative for NIK if you like that module/metaphor, but NIK will keep working just fine on any programs it already works on, which is to say if you absolutely HAVE to keep it around then keep a legacy version of PS installed and you'll be good to go.

That link and price is for the Upgrade version, which means you need a previous version for it to work.

Hmmm we'll I guess that won't work...awhile ago I had gotten there non pro version but didn't like the idea of paying yearly and the pro was more...so I returned it but they've kept me in the data base as a customer....

I'll just keep an eye out for the Topaz B&W...
