By way of experiment and just to get away from the more mundane I thought it might be fun to go a bit over the top with my single tree entry. I was reading Tom Wolve's "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test"
at the time the challenge was posted so thought it might be interesting to see the reactions to a really colorful LSD type inspired image. Sadly I notice it backfired completely and almost no-one was able to appreciate it at all :(

Here is my entry processed in the standard way.

Context is everything. "A Single Tree" + Standard Editing voters will not and did not expect a Grateful Dead poster. Should have saved it for the "Grateful Dead Poster" challenge. ;-)
FWIW, the original is pretty cool and unquestionably would have fared well - top 30-40% I would guess.

welcome and commiserations in " Winning" the brown, I myself am no stranger to Life in at this end of DPC spectrum. Many of us have this dubious honour, In fact one of my current entries will be there at the conclusion of the challenge.

It takes hard work and a doged determination to pursue the brown. Do not despair you will hit the jackpot with anentry you less expect to win and the Blue or other colour will be in your hands, admttedly I have not managed this yet but My entries seldom raise the roof but i feel there will come a day where all the favoured ribbon winners willbe having an off week and you and I will rise to the occasion !!

I tried that once myself, and finished 166 out of 175. Worse yet, the challenge was "Homage to Peter Max" and he was a hippie-psychedelic artist!

My one effort To getting a brown was undercut by Charlie Baker entering a black square.

The brown I actually achieved was a gag entry, but I didn't expect last place with it.

I like to do this on occasion -- the last time just the background for the recent Free Study -- and I only got one complaint and a bottom 10% finish.

I would have gave it a ten if the challenge was a Grateful Dead poster challenge. The other thing I have noticed is B/W photos are not scoring high anymore. Has the world moved to HDR only and massive Photoshop filtering?

I'm not sure about that last part. My B/W photos still do better than colour (except for my latest effort), and a lot of the photos on the front page are B/W.

That wonderful tree! Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1205222.jpg
Yep, I've done a few of these as well. Perhaps not as well as you did.

Maybe we should have a challenge devoted to color/shape changing?
