For me, the reality of photography, the core of photography, has never been that we use light to paint the scene, as it were, but that in a very tangible sense we use the scene to show us the light.

This business of Minimal Editing, if it does nothing else, teaches, or OUGHT to be teaching, something we might lamely call the zen of photography. When we separate our egos and our preconceptions and our so-carefully enumerated goals, when we separate all THAT from the act of "taking" photographs and begin to absorb the photograph, BECOME the photograph, BECOME the photograph and the camera both, so there is no separation, THAT is pure Photo • Graphis.

I like this stuff.

I struck the last because I think that limiting it to the image takes a little away from the experience. I don't think calling it the zen of photography is lame at all. Sometimes that moment is so pure it's magic.

This is still my favorite topic, always familiar, always entertaining, always informative. It's hard to resist the temptation to add my bit.

If photography ends with the shutter-click, then where does it start? Does photography begin & end with the shutter-click? If so, why ever do anything next? Does post-processing begin right after photography ends? including the option to not do any post-processing?

What does photography have to do with the photograph? Is photography a means to an end -- the photograph? The word photography is defined by Merriam-Webster as a noun. The word photograph is a noun or a verb. That must signify something. I don't know what.

The purpose of photography is -- what? To better see the light? If my eyes are open & what I see causes me to imagine a photograph -- am I doing photography without a camera? or am I doing art?

For me, the purpose of photography is to give me a starting-point in post-processing. I want a photograph, an image, so I can show other people a representation of what I see. My images are best seen written in light, on a computer screen. [/endbit]

I think I actually hate Minimal... I got two DQ's from images that won the voting in quick succession due to silly mistakes... I even got a DQ from a Challenge that I suggested (including the Minimal rule!)
After getting over my two week ban... I'm back and entering Extended Challenges :)

Come to think of it.. I don't much like extended challenges either.. I am always tempted to over-cook the image.. adding text, borders, textures and funky effects just because I can - LOL

I feel I can say this as the photog quoted is an old DPCer.......no offense intended to you.

If you don't like a ruleset, or the aggravation that goes with it, WHY enter????

Wouldn't it be easier to just take a pass?

I eneter both Minimal & Extended much less often than Standard, and usually only when the theme interests me that I feel like pushing challenging myself.

Isn't that why we're here? To make ourselves step outside our comfort zone from time to time?

No offence taken. I agree about the challenge and that is why I suggested minimal in one of my challenge ideas. It's easy to get caught out accidentally is all. The rules (as written) are ambiguous in some cases and I have pointed this out to the council.
