First off go easy as I am just getting back into photography. Second I wish I could have been shooting with my longer lens but my left arm is broken is six places so I am doing the best I can right now. Anyway should I crop this closer or does this look good as is?

Crop out the stumpy part of the dead snag the bird is on, from the left, and down a bit from the top, and you have a nice composition where the attention moves from the bird diagonallt down and right to the water in the lower left.

ETA: How the heck did you break your arm in SIX places? Ouch!

+1 (I feel kind of silly giving a +1 to anything Robert [30861.gif bear_music] suggest. He is wise and all knowing)

Is this what you are talking about

Too much on the left in my opinion. I would leave both branches (the one it is perched on and the one just to the left ) in he photo. That would put the bird closer to the rule of thirds location.

I was tempted to do like bear said and get the lower blue in the water, but wasn't crazy about the placement of the bird. I guess I'd do something like this:

But I added a bit more contrast -- seemed a little flat.

I would be tempted to clone out the other branch
