I leave tomorrow... My gf and I booked this last minute as we saw a round trip flight for less than 150 bucks and couldn't pass it up. Just a weekend get away but photos to come! :)

We will be in San Antonio for the majority of the trip!

Any last minute suggestions on food in either San Antonio or Houston? My GF has done research on things like Expedia and such but sometimes a locals knowledge is better. ;)

Wow, what a coincidence. I will be flying into SA tomorrow and staying in Boerne to visit with my 84 yr old father-in-law. Let me contact the wife to see if we have time to meet up.

The river walk down town will not disappoint you. Many places to eat, drink, and be merry. It is a total tourist trap but very nice anyway. The Alamo is nearby but has changed a lot since I have been going there since the early '60s.

PM blue jean babe as she grew up there and I will let her know to check DPC.

It would be great to meet another DPC member!

Well, I am nothing close to a local, but I'd certainly suggest checking out the food scene in Austin (perhaps the music scene as well), which is only about 50 miles away. A lot closer than Houston, and it is a rockin' scene.
Also, from March to November at dusk, you can consider watching the bats exit from under the Congress Ave. bridge in Austin. It's quite a sight! It's the largest urban bat colony in the US. As many as 1.5 million bats occupy the underside of the bridge!

go to the Gruene Hall in Gruene (pronounced Green)...especially if they are having any live music. It's one of the oldest dance halls in America...wonderful place.

And if you want the absolute best beef jerky...this is your place!!!

BBQ or this one

most of the things that I know about are when the bluebonnets are in bloom...they might be in their height right now...and if thats the case...Mule Shoe Bend is outstanding and there will be 100's of places to see them everywhere....oh, I wish I was going!!!

OK, talked to the boss and if you want to meet up this weekend there is no problem. If you need help getting from the airport to hotel or rental agency let me know and I can probably help you out. I am going to PM you my phone number.

Oops...me again

Guenther House in San Antonio outstanding breakfast/brunch - go early as they make homemade cinnamon buns but they don't last long (get a reservation if they take them).

And the Five Missions Trail

SandyP lives in San Antonio area

Good Authentic Mexican food....open 24 hours...good long family history. A little pricey for Mexican food but and experience for sure.

Ha!

I am deathly afraid of bats. The one animal that gets me really. I will go swimming with sharks, bare hand catch a snake, get up close and personal with alligators... But as soon as a bat comes into the equation, I run for shelter... No thank you! Lol.

That said, we fly into Houston so another drive is something we are trying to avoid. We had planned originally to drive over to Austin but because it's only a weekend get away we wanted to make sure we weren't rushed while in San Antonio. (plus, alcohol is a thing and don't want to go driving if I don't have to).

Thank you all for the suggestions! As for a meet up, we are meeting up with one of her friends who will be showing us around some. Most of our time will be spent with her.

We have a rental car that we are picking up from the Houston Airport, thanks though! :)

Janine, I have passed on all the links to my other half and we will look through them today to see if we need to add any to our list of things to do! :)

Thank you everyone!!!

Check out Lick Honest Ice Creams . at the Pearl Brewery. There's also a restaurant right there that we ate lunch at (I can get back to you with the name) but it was really good. Maybe inside the Hotel Emma (go in their lobby anyway because it's old and very pretty).

The restaurant is in different hotel nearby... this one has a Havanna feel. Ocho . . I highly recommend and it's not too pricey.
