Came across this fellow South Africans work and it's stunning...especially his wave photography. Amazing technique. Have a look at his photos on his Facebook page.
The ones with surfers in action are also beautiful.

And here is a tutorial for those interested on how to do it.

Oh! I love that! And it's so kind of him to share how.

Some beautiful work... I read through his tutorial and essentially his key to success seems to come down to selecting the right exposure time and controlling his panning. I suspect the latter is a learned art. I sure would want to use a tripod and a head with a panning feature.

Beautiful work. I wish I didn't live so far from the sea.

Yes apparently he uses a monopod and also at other times a tripod and with a panning head. The tutorial though is not written by him...I wanted to know how he did it and since in one of his facebook posts he mentions that he uses slow shutter and panning I then googled "slow shutter panning wave photography" and that tutorial came up as well as quite a lot of other info on this technique.

great stuff, thanks ThingFish! Since I'm right on the coast and love panning, I'm definitely going to try that. I did try panning on surfers before, not sure why it didn't occur to me before to follow the waves themselves :).
