I have finally saved to buy a new 20D and I would love some suggestions for additional gear such as lenses etc. Expecting to spend about $2000 total.

Thanks in advance.

Battery Grip
Canon 50mm 1.8f
Canon 17 - 40mm F4 L

Assuming your $2000 includes the camera...

EOS 20D Body
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 Xr Di
550ex flash
Canon 50mm f/1.8

(in that order)

Oh... and a seatbelt. ;-)

Yup definetly invest in a flash. No point buying a good camera and then only using the onboard flash *shudder*. You might as well just use a disposable from Wal-Mart :-)

I agree that an external flash is indispensible, but one noticable improvement in the 20D is a flash that is actually usable in a pinch. Much better coverage and decent power.

What do you plan on shooting? And do you have any accessories that you consider essential?

Well, I don't shoot anything specific. I think the lenses I buy would determine how I would shoot.

I guess I just wanted some tried and true accessories that you guys are familiar with. Name brands or well reviewed lenses are my biggest interest.

Thanks everyone!

In the price range you gave I would go with the two lenses Scalvert listed.

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di

and

Canon 50mm f/1.8 II

the Canon Timer Remote Controller TC-80N3 is a must have

TC-80N3

Search around for it because this is not the lowest price for it

a backup battery, if you like macro sigma 105mm f2.8 is a great lens i own it and love it, i would say a wide angle lens and a telephoto one...
I own the canon 90-300mm and the 18-55mm and if i'd new now i would have boughten the 25-200mm or the sigma 55-500mm but i'm talking about range and not quality lens so the quality lens has to be with another person who understands better than me or a site.
thats my 2c

The 18-55 'kit' lens works, but is not great glass. I got a Tamron 28-80, nothing special, for $70. Works well, cheap for now.
The Canon 50mm 1.8 is great- and at $70 a steal.
If you want macro..then one of the prime 90 to 105 range macro lenses is good, the sigma gets good reviews.

An external flash is a great item- the Sigma 500 is on my wish list. Lots cheaper than the Canon 550 or 580EX.

For more range, the Sigma 70-300 APO gets good reviews and at $209 is a steal.

An extra battery is kind of a luxury - charge teh one you got and go take 500+ pics. charges in a bit over an hour.

Soo...
tamron 28-80, canon 50 1.8, sigma 70-300, sigma 500 flash = $525 or so.
You'll want 1 or 2 1gb CF cards, $70 each or sometimes less if speed is not an issue and you watch staples/cc/bestbuy for rebates.

Oh yeah- $80 forr a backpack to carry it all in....and then another $100 for a Cokin P filter set up (incl a circ polarizer).

Then go book some weddings...and you can buy L glass!

Here are a few items that would go nicely with a 20D…

Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L Lens - $1,749.95

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L Lens - $1,319.95

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS Lens - $1,599.95

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens - $449.95

Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS Lens - $6,499.95

Canon EF 600mm f/4.0L IS Lens - $7,199.95

Canon EF 2x II Extender - $279.95

Canon EF 1.4x II Extender - $279.95

Throw in a good tripod (with a Wimberley Gimbal Tripod Head - $564.95 for the big glass), and a few other goodies and you’ll be all set. Depending on the other goodies, your total would be approximately $20000 US. All you need is 1 more zero. :)

Here's the one I'm eyeing right now...

Canon 75-300 F4-5.6 IMAGE STABILIZATION ULTRASONIC (58) - $411

I have the cheapo Canon 55-200mm 4.5-5.6 II USM which is a decent lens and don't really need IS up to 200mm. Didn't realize it was so soft until seeing images from the IS version above (plus an extra 100mm) I will soon be parting with the 55-200.

Though I don't have a 20D, I have been asking a lot of questions from people whose intelligence and reputations I trust, and have decided that the Canon 70-200 f4 L, $579US is my next lens purchase for my rebel. I have the 18-55 kit lens and the 50mm 1.8 so far. I am also eyeing a better tripod and the 420EX speedlight. This stuff adds up so quickly! I think I need a 2nd job to support my habit hobby! ;o)

That remote is great!
I love it. I also bought the 33' extension cord for it :)

A spare battery and a 1 gig card.

Third party batteries are about half the price of the Canon branded ones, and usually have more power.

Sandisk Ultra, Sandisk Extreme and Lexar 80x are the cards that write fastest in the 20D.

You can get by without a flash attachment for most types of shooting, the 20D has a very good built-in flash.

I purchased the 20D yesterday (1-28-05), and so far it is great! I also got a 1gb compact flash, extra battery, the camera came with 18-55mm lens, but I opted for an additional 70-300mm. I read alot about soft focus on many, many forums..but from what photos I have taken so far, this is one of the sharpest cameras I have ever owned. Everything listed above ran $2115.00 US.
