Being the anally retentive person I am (I may not seem it all the time, but I have bouts of it at times :P) I did some analysis of the results this week. I was really curious to see if there was any correlation at all between the scores I give to the photos and the way they are ranked on average. It took me a while, and a bit of fiddling with Excel, but here's what I ended up with...

First of all, I'll explain the way I vote. After all the voting I've done, I've worked out a pretty solid system. It goes like this:

10 - LOVED IT! (Can't say much more than that)
9 - Basically there was something that held me back from giving it a 10
8 - Usually a photo that was technically very good but left me a bit cold, or was highly appealing but flawed
7 - There's something I like about this
6 - I can appreciate that some thought was put into this
5 - It doesn't grab me, but I don't dislike it (I'm neutral on it, in other words)
4 - I disliked this photo a little bit
3 - I disliked this photo quite a bit
2 - I REALLY didn't like this
1 - A non-photo? (I haven't given any out for a long time)

Most photos get a 6 or a 7 from me. This was the way my votes were distributed last week:

Wow. That is some top notch analysis. It is interesting to see the correlation curves. I'm willing to bet mine is not so evenly spaced. I know it's a lot more of a bell curve with the middle being pretty high. My average is pretty low, a little below 5 methinks, but probably follows the curve like yours, just about 1 pt. below the line. I admire your thorough data processing though. It is a great way to see that you're seeing things sort of the same way the voting patterns are going. You must have some time on your hands, I'm sure that took more than a few minutes. Thanks for sharing it.

Lisae, being a numbers and stats kind of guy, I found not only your results incredibly interesting but also the fact that you took the time to do this. I find that I have a lot in the middle ground as well. I would be very surprised if my results didn't "Reflect" yours too. Thanks for the insight.

Geez, you do have a lot of time on your hands! :)

Actually, this is quite interesting, and I'd love to do something similar with my own scores... but my mathematically-challenged mind will undoubtedly prevent that!

Hehe, it didn't take THAT long! I just had to write down the scores and type them into Excel, after that... well, I have a degree in Physics, and I spent my whole final year analysing data from Quasars to see if there was some variation in the Fine Structure Constant, so it's kind of second nature :P.

This is similar to something I've wanted to do for a while...are you interested in sharing that spreadsheet? I've been encouraging adoption of that vote distribution graph on the profile page...

I chart my own vote distribution each week after I finish voting, just out of curiousity. I usually end up with a pretty good bell curve. I have never tried comparing my results to the average, but I might have to try that for this week's vote. Interesting stuff, Lisa.

OK, I uploaded the spreadsheet here. It's a bit sloppy, but it should all work out if you just replace the column of "My Scores" with yours. It's a bit of work typing it all in though... I wouldn't be surprised if I made some mistakes typing in the average scores too.

It's interesting you don't score many below 5. I have found myself increasingly voting for 8,9,10 and 1,2,3. So maybe i'll adjust my scoring to just 1 or 10 since it's pretty much subjective. (i.e. 1 if i don't like it, 10 if i do).

Hey, thanks. I save my votes and the results as Acrobat PDFs, so maybe I'll print them out to make the data entry easier.

Lisae,

I'm very proud that I was one of the lucky few who received a 10 from you.
Thanks.

The Average Vote: 4.985 so most of the voters didn't agree with you on my picture. Strange thing is I only received one comment that was slightly negative.

HUH????
You are amazing!! The data is very interesting! Thanks for a completely different perspective.

I'll second that!
