The Seven Heavenly Virtues:
faith, hope, charity, fortitude, justice, temperance, prudence

I think this would be an interesting follow up to the curret challenge. It would certainly be more challenge since sin is far more available these days :)

I agree, can't imagine what you could use for fortitude.

Sounds cool. Would definitely be a stretch!

Could anyone post a brief description up of each one?

From dictionary.com (edited to put it in context):

faith Pronunciation Key (fth)
Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing.
~ The theological virtue defined as secure belief in God and a trusting acceptance of God's will.

hope Pronunciation Key (hp)
A wish or desire accompanied by confident expectation of its fulfillment.
~ The theological virtue defined as the desire and search for a future good, difficult but not impossible to attain with God's help.

char·i·ty Pronunciation Key (chr-t)
n. pl. char·i·ties
Provision of help or relief to the poor
~ The theological virtue defined as love directed first toward God but also toward oneself and one's neighbors as objects of God's love.

for·ti·tude Pronunciation Key (fôrt-td, -tyd)
Strength of mind that allows one to endure pain or adversity with courage.

jus·tice Pronunciation Key (jsts)
The quality of being just; fairness.
The principle of moral rightness; equity.
Conformity to moral rightness in action or attitude; righteousness.

tem·per·ance Pronunciation Key (tmpr-ns, tmprns)
Moderation and self-restraint, as in behavior or expression.
Restraint in the use of or abstinence from alcoholic liquors. See Synonyms at abstinence.

pru·dence Pronunciation Key (prdns)
The state, quality, or fact of being prudent.
Careful management; economy.
Synonyms: prudence, discretion, foresight, forethought, circumspection

There are several other definitions of each of these, but this should give you a rough starting point. As I look through the list, I'm forced to wonder if this might be too challenging of a challenge :) The sins were easy since we are all surrounded by oppurtunities... Virtues have to be sought and are a rare commodity :)

This sounds like a nice challenge :)

This could produce some good images.. after garbage and sins, maybe something uplifting is warranted.. :)

I'm all for it. Don't know what the heck I would do, but it sounds like fun!

It would be nice to get back to something a little more straight-forward, like "Beer Cans," or something... my brain is hurting! :)

Oh yeah, the "teddybear flowers" crowd :) Yeah ok. Expect to see flowers with mundane titles that represent one of these virtues.

We already have a slew of "temperance" (i.e. stale, boring, self-restraining) photos for each week, do we really need to have a topic that emphasize it?

Concept shots of various themes would make good challenges once a month or so. One after another, or too often, is perhaps too taxing to the brain.(mine) I do like this idea of virtues in a few weeks maybe.

I want a teddy bear and flower challenge. I don't really know how to shoot anything else. :)

Why don't we just have a plain straightforward "cuteness" challenge. All voting to be based on cute-appeal.
10/16/2002 05:29:29 PM · #14
But Jak, that would be based on how cute your props are, and not how good your photo is.

I know, Ben. I was really being sarcastic, but left off the smiley!

I agree with Gracious that some time (2 or 3 weeks) should come between this and '7 deadly sins'. They are both 'thinkers' and tax the brain to find good interpretations.

I'm not sure why some folks are trying to tie the 7 virtues with 'cute', although the word 'bait' keeps flashing through my mind... If these virtues were 'cute and cuddly' I would suspect they would be a lot more prevalent in the world. It's much more of a struggle to depict (or even find) these virtues then to find an image of so called 'sins'. And where, exactly, does a teddy-bear or a flower fit here?

Pag --
Enough already, please. We know how you feel about "cute" stuff, teddy bears and flowers, etc. Dontcha think you could let one thread go by without spreading it on. Your message would be much more effective if you wouldn't keep harping about it (people are kinda starting to see it as a joke).

Why can't people agree to disagree... so you like things that are not cute and sweet, just because you don't doesn't mean there aren't people that do. Some people choose those subjects because there is enough pain in the world, and all they want to do is bring a little happiness to someone's face. Just because its a cute image doens't mean it doesn't have just as much meaning to that person. I may not agree with some of the photo's I've seen on here.. but that doesn't mean the person took a horrible shot. I try and vote according to photographic composition.
Just an opinion.

Pag - It's been said by many. Enough is enough. Put up or shut up.

People come to this site for constructive and encouraging criticism, not for cynicism (smiley's or not). Most people here are starting up here, and kids, flowers and teddy bears are readily accesible, so people shoot that. (a good and interesting picture of a teddy bear is probably the hardest thing one can possibly do, BTW)

There are other forums that are more appropriate for expressing your specific artistic senses if this one isn't good. Your score should be a good indicator of that.

I think this one would definitely challenge people. It really would open up to a lot of different photos. Some would fit more than one. Would like to see something like this tried.

this might be the record for reviving an old thread. Nov 2002 to May 2011.

Apparently, we've had 3 such challenges, but I can only find 2 of them.

Thank you - I'm all about conserving space and not being redundant. Yep, that's me.... :-)
