I like it but there's a bit overdodging (for my taste) at the bow of the boat. Otherwise you do good PS work.
08/16/2005 08:21:10 AM · #102
There's actually very little burning at the bow of the boat. It's mostly under the side. I might have got a little over enthusiastic at sharpening the boat, and I think maybe I overdid it a touch, and it sort of gives it an extra-burnt look. I'll keep this in mind for the future. Thanks for your comment! :)

I have just done another one, using virtually the same layer masks as Nazgul also some burning and dodging and local desaturation. Gone a bit OTT with some dodging in the sky though. There is another shot (different angle) My site Page 3

I like the version by surfdabbler very much

Question:When you use Selective Color Layers and you click back on them do they always default to Red and can you go back and adjust or are you just adding color effects on top of what has been done?

Yes, it does seem to default to red but it remains as you adjusted, therefore, if you push the slider over to the right, that is where it will be if you go back. So you are not adding any more, you can re-adjust, if that makes sense?
08/16/2005 10:16:29 AM · #106
So the previous adjustments are the new standard(base)setting and from there everything zero's out in the new adjustment window?

I'm curious though, why my three or four selective adjustment layers are then anonymous (not color coded) when I click back on them. Not telling me what I had done in that layers action.

I suppose it's no big deal unless you go back to a project weeks later and need remember what colors you had played with...for perspective.

nothing much, dodge and burn on sky and grass, levels, curves and selective color.
and my attempt at a tribute to Heida...

did a desaturated layer and then reduced opacity. Erased the boat (on teh desatrauted layer) so the colors on the boat would still stand out...

okay i have one

i really want this image to work (which it probably never will, cant make a choclate pie out of a dog turd) but the lighting was really cruddy because i strapped the camera to the ceiling fan to take it.

anyone want to give me some clues on fixing my booboos?
I get a nasty grain glow (see my circle entry) whenever i try to fix it.
(pm me if you want a larger version)
Pluhlease?

Describe what you want fixed...

By that, describe which elements appeal to you, which ones you dislike, and which ones you really wish were strengthened.

more or less i dont want it so dark.
heres what i was able to do (within basic) with the one i submitted for circles from the same shoot
I want the skirt to be visable, the colours to be there but i dont want all that diffused light crap going on around the body as i had in the circle edit.

Here's something I tried...

I know the colors aren't there the way you want them but it was actually the white balance giving me such a hard time. It was a little too warm and so it was hard to correct the skin tones and keep the color in the dress and carpet.

lot better than where i was getting Kevin :)
I don't know how to use the gradient map - anyone want to give me a crash course (i'm a fast learner i promise!)

did this yesterday but didn't have time to post it. Did Mr Tee's too, but then he showed me up with a great version he did himself!!! Good job :0)

Under basic editing rules:
*unsharpen mask with a radius of 100
*sharpen
*levels: rvb(0,0.92,243) to (0,253)
*levels: red(0,1.09,255) to (0,243)
*channel mixer: red ->r 67 g 33 b 17
*channel mixer: green ->r -8 g 100 b 10
*curves: darken a little the dark
*luminosity/contrast: luminosity -13

Greetings all,

I have a problem...for most of my entries I use my laptop (only computer available). The problem is that the LCD can be very misleading on brightness (viewing angle can make a large difference as well). The result, a lot of submissions which look fine to me look very dark to others. I've even gotten into the habit of over-brightening my shots but still they often come out dark.

My nude entry got numerous comments on darkness & contrast, but with many people liking the shot and wanting to score it higher. Few were seeing what I was seeing on my monitor. I believe those that were gave it many 8,9 & 10s.

I'm hoping that perhaps someone could adjust the contrast brightness to a more proper level. And then I can hopefully use the adjusted one as a guage in adjusting future photo entries.

Okay, I adjusted the photo to correct (i think) for the brightness of my monitor. On my monitor the gamma looks overly bright. Can you let me know if this looks good for all of you?

Here's my go at it:

I adjusted levels of sky and land separately, adjusted hue of sky slightly to make it less bluish and more purpleish, brought out the yellows and green in the foreground with by bumping up the saturation, and I used brightness/contrast to slightly bring the brightness down while bringing the contrast up. I then sharpened, and did lots of dodging and burning, especially on the grass in the foreground.

Let me know what you think...

So the following photo was processed using all the exact layers techniques as Heida's fairyland shot described in this thread. Here are the results

Before

After

Some questions for Heida or anyone who knows the answers:

1. Not entirely sure what I was trying to achieve with the channel mixer layers. Never used it before so I was a bit blind as to what result I was trying to achieve

2. It says in yours Heida, that you used Layer 14 with all below layers flattened - how do you do that?

3. Layers 10 & 12 you masked out certain parts of the image you didnt want effected - don't know how to do that either

Any comments about the results?

Where are the steps you are referring to? To flatten specific layers just highlight the ones you want flatten then go to Layer/Merge Layers. Only the ones you have selected will be flatten. I'm assuming you are using Photoshop.

But I can't seem to highlight multiple layers..... (& yes, Photoshop)

wow that looks great! Not sure why you cropped the sky tho, it has so much potential!

that steps she's talking about are page 2 (I think) of this thread...
