I just received the email about 30 minutes ago! Looks like they have done some fantastic upgrades. The batch renaming is one I have been waiting for.

It adds basic editing tools (rotation, cropping, geometric distortion correction) and some dynamic control (levels/curves) to the basic package. As that's all I do in PS after conversion these days, I think I'm right in there ;-)

I think it's a fantastic offer, Rawshooter|Essential was my raw converter of choice from the moment I started using it.
I think I will upgrade and buy myself the premium version today.

A question that arises is, hot pixel mapping in this application is the same as spot editting, would this be alowed in basic editing here at DPC.
Because now you can honnestly say: I just cnverted from raw, no spot editing....

I might get it. Cheaper then upgrading to CS2.

Essentials has been a great program for me. I ordered the Premium version this afternoon. Will try and remember to post how it goes.

Have been using the free version since it came out and love it, bought the new Premium version today, looking good thus far. Would recommend anyone who hasnt looked at it to give it a go, I dont think it supports Mac though for the Mac users.

I converted the same image shot in ISO 100 to compare and converted both via "Maximum" JPEG level in RSP and "10" JPEG level in DPP.
The image from RSP was about 4.5MB and the DPP was 8.5MB.

Does anyone have any idea about this 4MB difference in file size?

Jpeg is lossy, and compression settings will be different for every software.
The compression trows away data, so if you want to PP it further you better choose TIFF as your preferred file format.
Tiff is not lossy.
Now compare DPP an RSP again in TIFF and look at the output, not the filesize.

If one's sharper than the other, or has more noise, there will be a difference in size, because the noise and/or sharpness reduces the amount of compression that can be achieved.

I don't keep images in TIFF due to file size. If I want to keep a pic. I keep the raw version instead.

The image was a same shot that I took, so it should have the same noise and information. I tried to optimize the image by using curves and sharpening, but they weren't heavily worked on. I'm still surprised that the highest allowablle JPEG conversion would result in 4MB difference in size. Of course, the real question is is the difference in file size noticible when you make resonably sized prints like 18x20 or smaller.

OK - finally got around to loading it up and working a few shots. The interface is slightly different than the Essentials version but nothing you don't get used to quickly. The most helpful new tools I found so far were the crop and the straightening tools. Great additions. This along with the ability to upsize after cropping during the conversion process works well. The upsizing seemed to do a good job with some softening that can likley be taken care of by adding a little more shapening during conversion.

Other new tools included levels and curves, more control over noise, additional color control and a new zoom tool while holding the curser over the area you want zoomed, as well as the ability to compare multiple RAW images. There is also the ability to save custom appearances that I have not had a chance to try out as yet.

Overall I would say it is worth the $60 US over the free version. At least try it using the free 15 day trial. I think you will like it.

Last day for the discount if you're thinking of upgrading.

I was using the Bridge in CS2 for managing my RAW images due to the convenience. Having seen RSP 2006 and processing ~75 images the workflow is much smoother in RSP 6 than in Camera Raw with seemingly more control over the conversion. After using the trial for only 15 minutes I bought the license. Well worth the $73 CDN IMO.

I bought it--even though Bibble 4.4 finally fixed many of the problems that drove me to RSE.

I still love the ranking for workflow to sort the photos in RS/RSE, Bibble doesn't have this. The new Bibble is better than it was for output sharpness and thus comes close to RSE, but RS has the best workflow IMHO.

Bibble does now include PTLens to adjust lens distortion, so that's a leg up for it. And Bibble has highlight recovery, which works at least sometimes to fix a few small blown out areas. And Bibble lets you go through and do crops and adjustments to a bunch of JPEGs, without touching the originals. RS still won't even let you view JPEGs in the directory--so you can see the output even, if you convert a directory to JPEGs.

The new RS crop and straightening additions are definitely worthwhile. Certainly worth a 60 upgrade price for the new features. So I paid my money and will continue to use both, depending on the picture set.

And of course, they made the upgrade period so short, you don't have a lot of time to think about it. Clever, but not very nice.

RS/Pixmantic is offering a "Xmas Special Offer" for users of essentials.
$20. discount. Upgrade to premium 2006 for $79. (reg price 99 bucks). Subscription to the newsletter seems to be required with coupon code "xmasraw" Offer ends 12/31/2005. Not as good as the $59 intro in October, but still not a bad price for this unusually good software.

it's pretty much all i use for processing now. besides the clone & dodge & burn tools on some images.

well worth the money IMO.
