I was proud of this shot, and expected it to do signifigantly better than it did. All of my comments were positive, yet my score was poor. Please tell me what is wrong (or not right) with my shot.

thank you

I think your Photographer's Comment on your image states it clear as day:

"I simply walked up to a maple tree, lined up the sun behind it, and snapped this shot. pretty simple"

The image is fine, but the idea may have been a little too simple. Something with a bit more creativity would have scored higher. I think that's what brought your score down some.

My 2 cents.

Well, due to time limitations I didn't vote in the "Ground up" challenge, but if I had, I would have given this image a 5, maybe a 6 if I was in a really good mood.
Your colors are a little washed out and you are just a hair overexposed. Taking the pic either early in the morning or late in the evening would have helped with the overexposure part (and helped a bit with the colors), and playing around with the levels in post-processing would help punch up the colors even more.
I also think this pic would work better as a vertical crop rather than a horizontal one. It would give more "oomph" to the feeling of being at the bottom of a really tall tree.
I like the concept, but as Beagleboy hinted at, trees are very static subjects and need a creative treatment in order to do well.

I hope some of this gives you a little help.

My thoughts exactly.

Very good shot.

Notice the difference between yours and this one:

Perspective is very simillar however you focus more on one element in the pic. The ribbon picture uses three; sky (contrasting blue and white), bark (interesting texture) and colorful leaves. Your focus draws the viewer to the bark instead of the horizon / sky and the exposure of the sky is a bit distracting.

I do like the shot and feel it deserves a better score defintely.

I wonder if it would be improved by focusing on the interesting complexity of the branches.

I would add that the ribbon picture uses a much more dynamic composition, leading from the corner into the picture, and the clouds continue that diagonal. The lighthing is much more interesting as well.

I would have given it a five as it met the challenge and maybe a six as it isn’t a bad image.
It certainly has no ‘wow’ factor.
If it was maybe taken at night with the moon in the background or even converted to black and white; just something so it was another “boring up the side of a tree shot”.

I left a critique. barndog also makes very good points, IMHO.

They both gave me vertigo and I scored them equally.
