I think it could be fun to have a challenge where you take a photo of some product that would be used for advertising purposes. Product photography is an art of its own and requires some amount of skill and effort to do well. Lighting, focus, depth of field, sharpness and all technical aspects of photography play a role in a product shot.

I AM ALL FOR THAT! WOOOH!

Finally, a challenge that perfectly fits my obession with photographing the most banal of subjects, like the phone on my desk, or my mouse. I imagine we could see some hysterical entries, as well!

I wonder if the title should be the name of the product being advertised?

That's a great idea ! I would think we would see some awesome photos.

It could be challenging too if everyone was dealing with the same subject.. maybe not the same brands, but same basic item...

If we get to choose the product, that would be hilarious in many cases. Think about what might be chosen by the person who took "Watching the Detectives" or "Lone Pubert".

May be even more fun if it's a parody ad for a product... lol.. like a street bum with a pack of "lucky strikes" or something along those lines...

Or combine it and do Andy Warhol's Campbell's soup tin...

Lots of potential here, certainly no shortage of commercialism around ; )

Sounds like a really great idea!

Hey Drew or Langdon, clarify something for a confused newbie if you could. How DO you determine the challenge topics? Do you just make a list and have a script randomly select from that list? Or do you guys specifically choose a new topic from a list? Or do you maybe down a few beers late Sunday night and just do whatever sounds good (which, I might add, is a perfeclty accceptable method)? Whats the method?

Thanks!

We've got a huge list that we keep going from all of your suggestions -- and then we usually just try to figure out what would be a good next challenge ... i.e. emphasize photo skills, creativity, specific scenarios, etc.

So certainly keep em coming. We're listening ;)

One idea is 'weird angles' that certainly stretches people to come up with new ideas. Anything you like, just not from the 'standard' viewpoint.

The only thing I think that with the International membership that you have on this site, You would have to be careful not to make the subject matter to specific.

They don't have products outside the USA? :) Wow!

Seen the joke!:-)
Yes we do but What I meant was dont use brand names use the generic such as Margarine instead of Oleo or whatever it is called in your region. etc.
Now You would probably buy Sausages, but I would buy boerewors!!lol!

I think instead of saying 'products', it should be a lot more specific, like:

cellphones,
cooking utensils,
cuts of meat,
macro products,
computer accessories,
clothing,
shoes,
hats,
swimsuits,
medical prosthetics,
medicine,
audio equipment,
cars,
motorcycles,
tools,
toys

or anything else, but all do one type of thing to make it really challenging!

Thanks. If I end up needing one, I'll send you the money for freight.
