How about a challenge on professions/trades that are fast being made extinct by modernisation/automation? Like cobblers, kite makers, etc. I'm sure we'll get fantastic entries of vanishing trades we never knew even existed!

That might be hard to find in some areas. The old trades have already all but vanished in more urban areas of the world.

That's what would make it a real challenge! Hence 'vanishing'. :)

As far as I can tell anything over 50 years old around here has been torn down and rebuilt. I think I'd struggle to find any industry that's been here for more than a decade...

Now I used to live in Chester, England - most of that place is original from when the Roman's had a garrison there. My local newsagents was built in the 15th century.

however, the challenge would be less photographic and more just plain 'finding'

Its like that now in Cirencester... where I live.. The church I got married in is around 1000 years old. All of Ciren is really old.. Its the capital of the Costwolds, and was the Capital of England when the Romans invaded.. Hence all of the ancient Roman architecture which is still around.

Magnetic, you said it better than me. I would have to bow out of a challenge like that due to the fact I don't have the kind of time it takes to find a subject much less plan out the photograph itself. If it is hard for me in Montgomery, AL think about people in New York, Seattle, San Francisco, etc.

Be great for me -- I live in Western North Carolina. Southern Appalachian Mountains. We have farmers (the old-fashioned kind with horses and plows, but most do use tractors), we have dulcimer makers, we have woodcarvers, the list goes on. Ya'll can just come here for that challenge. :-)

Hi to both neighbors! I'm from Asheville. I live at the beach now, but I go home frequently--I miss the mountains! Yes, we could have a hey-day at the Folk Art Center on the Parkway--I love to go there and buy coffee mugs and carvings.

Actually, even in Seattle, I can think of a great subject for the vanishing trades challenge!

Cool. I'm glad you had some ideas. I guess I'm just used to all the modern conveniences such as cars, tv, the grocery store, and the mall. It seems like that's all I'm ever around these days. (I think I need a vacation!)
