Somebody gave (for a photo job) me a package of Epson Premium Glossy Photo paper 92 bright and after I opened the outer box, I found a warning about using it in printers other than Epson. I can't afford to wreck my HP deskjet right now. Has anybody had experience using the "wrong" paper with dire results? Does anybody want to buy some Epson paper? (50 sheets)

what does the warning say?

The paper won't hurt the printer. The only issue u may encounter is how the HP ink reacts with the epson paper.

*** No matter what I say based on my own experience, don't put more weight on my comment than what the manufacturer says.

like john said, it wont hurt the printer.. but the BEST prints i've done come from HP paper (on my HP printer) of course... i've tried others but they always seem so much more .. dull, and not enough contrast. I haven't tried epson paper though, so no help there. :(

You might not get the best quality prints, but it won't hurt your printer. Give it a try.

I've used Epson paper on my HP printer, it doesn't harm the printer. It's just the customary company warning that goes something like "use only OUR products" and "we're not resposible for anything out of the ordinary". Whatever.

I have tried several different papers with my HP also, including Epson, HP, Ilford, and Kodak. I seem to be getting the best results with the Kodak papers...

I have never heard of that before, but since it says that, i retract my last statement.

I use epson paper in my HP printer with great results. That same epson paper though doesn't work at all well in my epson printer. I have to buy OTHER SPECIAL (read that, more expensive) epson paper to work with it. Go figure.

I suspect it is just cya from the paper manufacturer (an aside, some multinational companies seem to be stopping selling products in the US because of litigation - this is also probably why clauses like this are put in)

The main issue is that the paper sizing (sizing is not the paper size - it is related to the paper composition) and coatings are designed for a specific set of inks.

If you use the paper in a different printer (or with different inks) the ink may not get absorbed as quickly - pooling on the surface, or it may get absorbed faster, giving faint, poor quality prints. If you got sufficient pooling, I guess the surplus ink could damage the printer in extreme cases.

I've tried the HP high end photo papers with Epson inks and the results are nasty, but it is mainly a matter of getting the printer settings correct for the paper type, so that a suitable amount of ink is used.

P.S. Don't use sand paper. That might damage the printer head.

;)

Well, Thank You all for your experienced responses. You, too, Jacko! 8-)

I've been using a Canon specialty paper in the HP (SINCE THE COPS STOLE EVERYTHING EXCEPT A RATTY MOUSE PAD, but that's another story) with no apparent ill effects to the printer. I'm going to go ahead and try it out. If it looks awful, I'll give it to my daughter, maybe trade it for a weekend's use of her Canon G3...

I posted a warning in another thread about that particular Epson paper.
