I was only registered as a voter since I didn't have a digital camera yet. I really wanted to play along with everyone, instead of just voting. I had been thinking about buying a camera for a long time and finally made the decision thanks to dpchallenge.com. I took a look at what cameras the higher rated pictures were taken with and compared the features on dpreview.com and was able to find a great deal there on a similar camera. I should be able to have a picture in for the next challenge. I can't wait to play along!! Thanks for an awesome, ever-expanding web site!!!

And while you're at it - does anyone who has a Coolpix5000 have any comments about it? I am thinking of getting one....
Thanks.

Have heard one or 2 missing their off-loaded CP990/995s but it will take time to get to know it - more pixels, hot shoe etc.

I waited in anticipation a very long time for the CoolPix 5000, but wound up buying a smaller Canon PowerShot S40 because the image quality on the Nikon wasn't up to snuff and it's much less portable. My favorite digital camera website www.dpreview.com gave it a less than stellar review as well, and I trust the owner's analysis completely. Check it out for yourself! The website is pretty amazing, with almost every newly released model of camera given a 10 or so page review covering body design, ergonomics, menus, specs, side-by-side camera image quality comparisons, photo tests, pros and cons, a sample gallery, and much, much more. It's crazy, really. The guy must have OCD! I'm sure it will help you decide on exactly the right kind of camera for you.

In conclusion, I decided not to get the CoolPix 5000 because it has many of the same issues with noise and chromatic aberration as the entire CoolPix line. The Powershot S40 has excellent manual controls, tones of creative shortcut modes, snappy performance, a much smaller body, and excellent image quality for less cash, but you lose the Nikon's excellent macro/close-up ability, and the multicontroller takes a bit of practice to get used to. The choice was clear for me! :)

And I don't work for Canon!

That being said, the Canon PowerShot G2 is similar to the S40, buy with good macro ability, in a more Nikon CoolPix 5000 sized package. I went for the smaller, more 'touristy' camera in anticipation of geting a nice SLR someday for the crazy shots.

Thanks for the referral on the dpreview site. It is awesome! I see there are some problems with the Coolpix5000, so am checking out some others, like that Canon G2, which I like. I have a 35 mm Nikon, which I learned to shoot on and still consider my "baby", (sick isn't it? : ), so I figured another Nikon would be as great.

dpchallenge is just the forum I was looking for: informative, assistance, experience building -- (sort of worried about da-drew, though!!)

Thanks.

The Nikon Digital SLRs are much better than the Nikon consumer-grade products. But still, Nikon products always have the best features -- they are really designed for photographers by photographers. For consumer-grade digital cameras, I trust Sony (because of their Carl Zeiss lense) and Canon (G2 is a great machine).

Hope this helps.

I had a Nikon CoolPix 900 for years, and Nikon does make a good camera. Their split-body designs are *great* for capturing unusual shots, you can usually see something in the LCD no matter what crazy angle you're trying to shoot from, and it's realy easy to hold, but it's not pocketable. The PowerShot G2 has a flippy LCD which may be as useful, it sure looks convenient but I haven't tried one out myself yet.

I had really high hopes for the 5000, it's a shame that they didn't do a better job... but I'm still eagerly waiting for the Nikon D100, their upcoming prosumer SLR. After years of wanting to replace my CoolPix 900 with the perfect combination of sensitivity, controls, image quality, and portability I realized that it's going a really long wait, and decided to just get two cameras. One for being a tourist and one for being an artist. That way I can have it all! I'm really impressed with the quality and size of the PowerShot S40, letting me take it everywhere without any trouble. All my pix here were taken with it! But there's no replacement for a high-ISO SLR for capturing exactly the shot you want, something about framing through a SLR viewfinder is so natural compared to staring at a teeny little LCD.

Now if someone would release a pocket-sized SLR... nah... never happen.
