So I have booked my first real photography job shooting a Bar Mitzvah in November.

While I know it's a ways off, I wanted to start learning whatever I could and see if anybody here has any experience photographing Bar Mitzvahs. If anybody has some photos they'd like to post I'd greatly appreciate it.

The gear I'll be using at the event includes my 20D, Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, Tamron 28-200 f/3.8-5.6 and a Canon 430 EX with a Gary Fong Lightsphere. Any advice? Is there anything that I desperately need to get?

Thanks!!

Basically, I suggest you search for and read the numerous threads on wedding photography -- the issues are mostly the same.

Whatever you are agreeing to do, get it in writing in advance.

The important part of a Bar Mitzvah is the ceremony, which of course you are not aloud to photograph at. So, a pre ceremony photoshoot will be arranged. When I did my first one last year, I spoke to several jewish people and asked them what was important to portray, and then try to capture that. Talk to the family, also, after the photoshoot (which should be a day or two before the actual ceremony) offer family portraits outside of the temple. Go scout out the temple first and find a good location for a backdrop inside and out for that kind of stuff. I will post some pictures for you later when I get a chance.

That's really good info. I guess it's good to learn about the type of ceremony/event that you are shooting before hand and not assume that you can take pictures at any time.

Check the policy on photography/flash at the synagogue.

For friends, I have taken photographs during the pre mitzvah practice and at the party afterwards.

At this particular synagogue during the ceremony, photographers are in the upper balcony with long telephoto lens.

Here is a gallery with one bar and one bat mitzvah by DPCer TerryGee that you can study for ideas.

On Barbara Warren's wedding site portfolio is an example of bat mitzvah photography.
