I am shooting an event on the 19th and was asked if the venue would be able to browse through my photos and purchase some for their advertising and website.

What should I charge for something like this? Should I think of this like I am a stock house and charge them like $200 per shot?

Any input is appreciated.

Price a bit lower than that to encourage repeat business.

Ask them about size and usage. Make sure you are not giving up all of your rights to the photos and are simply licensing their use.

Charge more for Exclusivity (you can time limit this too)

Charge more for wider usage, less for web only.

The bigger it will be printed, charge more.

etc.

My suggestion is to sell them a PACKAGE.

How do you price the package? Well ... start with your day rate for shooting an assignment.

You already know they want the photos for their website ... but what OTHER uses? For example a brochure? or a Magazine ad. The MORE EXPOSURE, the bigger the price tag.

THEN ... ask youself these things: How much do I want this sale? Will it lead to other assignments (no reason to GIVE your stuff away)? Will having this company name on MY resume/portfolio give me any mileage?

Then ... write a letter of agreement outlining the rights (and what they mean because they probably don't know). And set your rate for 10 photos or 20 or a package of 50.

If you need more help ... check out what your local wedding photos are charging for their packages (then subtract the print costs) and go with something similar. ie a package of 50 photos for $xxx.00

Hope that helps.

Maybe this Stock Photo Price Calculator will help you...

I did a couple of sample quotes, it looks like this calculator is significantly higher than places like Alamy and MyLoupe.

Check out those two sites and get an idea. If it is a local company, I think I would drop about 40-50% off the price since you are not sharing the sale through a stock company. It saves them money and you still get full price as if you used a stock company.

for stuff like this, i typically charge an hourly rate and turn over a cd of images with basic edits (sized, cropped, minor color correction). i typically retain full copyright and ownership, while giving the client an unlimited, perpetual license to use the images however they want (except that they cannot resell them). sometimes, the client will take copyright ownership. for the most part, i really don't care, because this type stuff really has no other use nor any real shelf-life.

the hourly rate varies depending on time of day, length of event, and just how much shooting i am going to have to do (if it is a meal with a speaker, there's not a lot of shooting going on; if it's an open house meet-and-greet, there might be a LOT of shooting going on). all in all, the rates have run between $75-250 per hour for the shooting, nothing for the post-processing (because i pretty much do it in batch mode, the only real work i have to do is delete the undeliverable shots).
