HIDDEN PEARL NR. 1 - Selected on 20th September 2003
=======================================================

Following the storm which eventually created this new forum category (Individual Photograph Discussion), I decided to start a new thread dropping my previous one (about how did I vote in a challenge).

The scope of this new thread is pretty simple: hunting in the DPC database looking for pictures that are hidden for whatever reason (the rating, the age, the thumbnail which makes them not so evident, etc..).

The first picture I selected is:

Romantic Mechanic

I generally have a preference for pictures which have their strength in the idea more than in the technique, even if, technique is very very important.

But the technique can be improved with patience, while not the same can be said about ideas.

I find the compositive idea behind this photo very strong and based on a combination of logical contrasts:

[1] the delicate flower vs. the hard metal tool
[2] the hot color (yellow) of the flower's center vs. the cold (blueish) color of the raw metal, surrounded by the neutral white of the petals.

The geometrical aspect of this composition is also a good point of this photo even if it does not respect the very much suggested "Rules of the Thirds".

I reckon that the high value of this pic is behind the brilliant idea of the photographer and I look forward to see her creativity in action in the near future.

Edited to add the title on top of the post

I think this was a fine choice and a well-done and constructive analysis. I usually lean towards concept over technique as well, so I look forward to some more examples ....

Why and how did you pick my photo over all the other great photos on this site? Was it just luck!

Thanks again

Dear Melissa,

I am going through DPC's database looking for "hidden pearls" and the reason why I picked your photo it is hopefully well-described in the analysis I wrote on it.

Keep looking in this thread for other hidden pearls from other DPC's users =)

I learn a lot in my quest and I hope to be able to share some of my learning.
