Pretty good that one ....

A couple of points...this is a composite of more than one image, and the color is oversaturated...ie. not natural...as explainedby the poster of the image.

hypersaturated (says the location of the image) ... and the stars look a bit fake to me.

would love to see this one in full-moon though :)

Pretty cool looking. If you want another neat view of the moon, go to Google Moon and zoom in all the way

I've seen that photo before. Too bad it's not from the original photographer's site so we could see who the credit goes to.... (not the OPs fault, mind you, but whoever linked it at that site).

From memory, the image is a carefully over saturated series of composites designed to bring out the very subtle shading of the moon's bland surface features. The background, I'm afraid, is composited in via photoshop. It's impossible to expose correctly for the bright moon and the dim background stars in a single shot.

Just read down to jemison's post. Well-explained Bill!

That shot was by Noel Carboni, and as he states:

The Moon in Hypersaturated Color
Stacked from 15 exposures of 1/5 second at ISO 100 This image is a mosaic of 15 separate and slightly overlapping 8.2 megapixel images from my Canon EOS-20D (unmodified), taken in Raw mode and converted and stitched together in Photoshop CS2. The exposures were each 1/5 second at ISO 100.

Noel has a number of pretty amazing Astrophotography images on his website.
Perhaps his best moon shot though I no longer see on his site.
I have a full-resolution copy on my website (3000x3750 pixel, 1.06MB) and can be viewed here.
(file name reflects copyright as does EXIF data)

Bod: yes, I see that you simply linked to Noel's post in that other site's thread. I hope you didn't think I was fingerpointing at you. Like I usually do, I hurried a response in before I finished reading the whole thread.

Brad: I think the shot you reference on your site might just be Noel's original "normal" shot which he later hypersaturated and added the starry background to.

It is Noel's work that I have been aspiring toward with my own lunar work. I have concluded that my standard Nikon Coolpix 4500 setup will never achieve the magnificent resolution and clarity he achieves, so I'm going to spend this winter shooting the moon with my 30D at prime focus on a 12" SCT, hoping to get enough clear shots to assemble a composite like Noel's. Truly inspiring lunar photography!

It wasn't me who linked to Noel's post : ) but no, I didn't think you were fingerponting at anyone.

yep, it's amazing what you can do with cameras and computers these days. Would such an image have been possible 50 years ago?

ROFLMAO is putting it lightly. Especially since I kept moving it around to have one of the points in the center as I zoomed. Too funny!!

As far as the subject of the thread this may be way photo shopped but with the exception of the blue coloring I like it a whole lot!!
