I had originally shot this for HDR but decided to use it for the b&w challenge instead... I thought it was pretty good in grayscale, guess the voters didn't agree.

Here are a few of mine...

What a high-scoring challenge. In any other challenge a 6.5 would have gotten at least a top 10, if not top 5.

jaded_youth's entry of 6.5057 should have finished much higher.

Entered:

came 20th, which was OK

Had a couple of other ideas for this challenge

Are we segueing to under-rated? Loved jaded_youth's Lucy!

Here's my choice.

There were so many entries barely receiving 5 that I voted 6,7 & 8 for and now we are up against HDR as well, got to get cracking in learning that real quick to be able to keep up! LOL

I just love to take photos of horses, amazing creatures and so alert. This is my outtake of Hilayel Ramadan the beautiful Arabian champion his name could be translated to Crescent Moon and his color is absolutely amazing in real life, a tint of blue. My entry had his legs blurred or in motion, just shows how fast he moves, the light didn't allow me more than a 1/100

Didn't like the angle looking down like that...the third one in the serie looks better imo..

Didn't like this one enough to enter it, but the toddler's expression is adorable. Should have brought the good flash to try and fill in so I could get a sharper pic.

There was something about this one that was off to me but I couldn't figure out what it was.

This was my cousin resisting having his picture taken.

This is what I entered:

I really liked your entry - had it in my top 10 :)

Thought it would be too out of the box and went with a standard old building shot instead (and did badly).

My Outtake:

She was hanging out in the same field the old house was in that my entry was taken at. I call her Sally. :) (I hope she's a she)

Had a hard time deciding between these two. Went with the second because of the richer tonalities. It didn't do anywhere near as well as I expected :-(

I would suspect that most folks shot in color then converted to black and white using the various channel tweaks or (heaven forbid) only applying a desat.

If you originally shot in color, post your color and b&w. It would be interesting to see both, side-by-side.

Here is my original: and my entry:

For my entry, I created two adjustment layers, one for saturation and the other for channel levels, which I tweaked and tweaked 'til I got tones the way I wanted it.

I should have gone for this one - I just thought the voters would prefer a wrinkly old man over a XXXXXXXX

sorry, pulled it to enter in the November free challenge

I shot in b/w because I figured it was easier than trying to picture what it would eventually look like when converted. Was that taking the easy way out?
