Kavey, it was exactly that concern that prompted us to require at least 6 months between changes (6 months in Internet years is a lot, you know).

Also, I'm not sure how intensive it would be to make it retroactive, but I, too, think that would be good.

The problem with making this change retroactive is that the data does not exist to accomplish this.

I wasn't talking about more than a few months back at most... just to cover the period which has seen the most name changes, i.e. the last couple of months. Do you think SC between them would be able to work out a list? I'm not being facetious, I'm genuinely asking.

Well it would probly be tedious, but are their copies of the name change request (SC Messages) in someones inbox lol.

Whilst those who read every last thread in the forums may be able to keep up, I certainly can't, and I do read a high number of threads. And it's frustrating not to know who I'm reading/ speaking to when I see an unrecognised name that actually belongs to a long-standing member with many, many posts behind them.

Very pleased that previous names are at least going to be listed in users' profiles and personally would be very pleased if that was backdated to cover at least the last 3 months, longer if records exist.

I totally agree with you and hate it when someone changes their name. I tend to forget who they were for a while.

It'd be very tedious, as there are more than 8,000 tickets on file. This does not include requests that wew handled informally (PM's, requests in chat, and the like).

As to the request to go back 3 months, I doubt it's worth it. In three months, we'll have three months of history anyway. I don't se what's gained long-term by making the cutoff November 2006 instead of February 2007.

Completely unrelated to this thread (but perhaps partially inspiring this thread) I have changed my username.... The artist formerly known as Palmetto_Pixels is dead... I've picked this new alias based on my upstart photography business and a friend of mine is using my previous alias as his business name.

I hope this creates mass confusion and I anxiously await my 6 months to be over so that I can stir the pot again! ;-P

That is all.

You have NO idea how accurate that observation is. I cook a LOT of Mexican food, and if Karma gets into the leftover beans she can be a bit breezy for the next 12 hours or so...

Just to put everyone's mind at ease, I will *not* be changing my username.

Also, I will *not* be running for President in 2008.

Great thread! I'm finally getting rid of my cumbersome, cheesy user name and going with, well, my OTHER cumbersome, cheesy user name! I will soon be the same name I use on my stock sites--idnic_is_hot!

Well okay--it's actually going to be Pixlmaker, but just so you know the above name is open for the taking... :o)

The reason why the last three months (to me) seems different to the previous months/ years is that it encompasses the period when changing name has become much more common and more about entertainment value than anything else.

It's these changes that I (and, clearly, others) find difficult as opposed to the one-off changes by users who, on deciding they were going to stick around, realised the name they'd signed up with didn't really work for them.

just wondering...along with the posting of their former name in their profile would it be more useful for at least maybe a month if it was posted under their name in the threads too?

I know, I know re-codeing but it would make it much easier to notice the change...at least for my small mind anyway.

Just an idea.

Can't you email all inactive users (say, 1 year or more) and have a link for them to click on if they want to maintain their account? If you don't receive a response from the email within 1-2 months, delete the account. Then they've had their chance.
