That is exactly what I was thinking. I hate it when people sign up with smiles473_xyz just because it is all they could think of that was still available.

Maybe this will be interpreted as defending my own decision, but really, what difference does it make to you if SC and the Admins decide to be nice people? All this "I hate it" stuff seems rather mean-spirited.

People change their business names, their real names, outgrow their names, marry into new names, or realize they've made mistakes in their choosings that they couldn't have foreseen. I remember one instance here where someone was looking to avoid a cyberstalker. I remember a LiveJournalist who was forced to do it because unbeknownst to him there was a company by the same name that found his blog and threatened to sue for some kind of infringement. Everyone has a reason, even if it's just "because I feel like it".

It's their account, not yours. So I don't understand why you care why or if I or anyone else do it. As I said earlier, it's currently a trend. The novelty will pass, so just ride it out and eventually name changes will become just as rare as they were before.

1. usernames should not be allowed to change at all. it complicates matters. the "change username" feature should be removed from a user's reach (or hide its existence entirely) - in RARE cases when a username must be changed, let the user specify why the site admins should change the username (or should even bother, if at all) if it's a trivial or not serious reason - reject the request.

That's too heavy-handed. The majority of people here are, after all, paying customers, despite having to conform to a TOS and guidelines. If there's little benefit to be gained by the owners from withholding this kind of functionality, and if it can be done within guidelines, and customers have been asking for it, it doesn't really make sense to lay down the law like this.

2. in the forums, perhaps we should display the user's "Name" and not the "username".

I think that's a good idea. Lots of forum software does this, and I agree that it would seem to make more sense. Some boards give users the option to display either their user name, or whatever they put in their "real" name field.

I hope you weren't referring to my posts, because i didnt say "i hate it" nor was it a personal attack on previous requestors for name changes. what had been done, is over - i was merely suggesting my feedback about the future direction of the site in a whole. nothing personal.

While these 2 examples would coincide with what I'd call "good reasons for a username change", i'd also like to comment that, with what's currently being implemented, the "cyberstalker" problem will not be resolved because the old username will still be shown on a user's profile. cant comment on the username = company name issue because i havent read/heard about it, but my guess is that the person asked for it, probably by posting inflammatory blogs and tainting the company's name or reputation, or worse, imitating as an official spokesperson.

this is a public forum, and making a feedback to an issue that has impact on the site as a whole appeared reasonable, to me anyway. i'm sorry if you take my posts as a personal attack, because honestly it wasn't.

Yeah, me, too.

I missed his post before I just went looking through my favorite photogs list to see whether to drop anyone (nope) and got stopped cold: who's "Brad"?

And now I can't help myself, so I need to share this joke. A friend of mine had a pool in his backyard with this sign:
"Welcome to our ool. Notice there's no p in it. Let's keep it that way!"

That's the thing, he wasn't. I followed the blog for awhile before and after, and he was an average joe blogger who had never heard of the company at all before they got their panties in a twist and sent a "cease and desist" notice. I remember how upset he was about it.

Also- I was referring to the detractors as a whole, not you specifically.

Wait. If I change MY name to Rebecca I'll seem like a more professional photographer?

Man! If only I'd known yesterday! Is Rebecca_too available?

Sure, but you might have to discuss the "too" bit with the Clan of Too. They may have a registered trademark or something ;-)

Oooohhh.... I'm thinking that debfythetoo is probably available and might result in much higher scores and placements in future challenges... Think?? I'll petition the Too clan to adopt me...

I agree - why not just open 7 or 8 different accounts like I do and then you can use all of your favorite names. It helps when the forums are quiet too - at least you have someone to talk to.

You just gotta be careful not to say the same thing under two different names or otherwise confuse your conversations.

Not speaking from experience.

Ahem.

Would you like to rephrase that, or should we just ban you now? : (

Question to the SC,

Have you received my ticket to change my username? 24 hours are (or are about to) come and gone.

;) thanks

My heart stopped for like five seconds - I thought I really had been deleted - and I was only on because I am on the cache. Good one Ken - dang! I don't get caught off guard like that too often.
