It struck me that a really interesting feature of some photos is the shadows that they capture, but a lot of people perhaps don't pay attention to this fact. I thought a challenge based on shadows would be an interesting thing to encourage people to play with lighting and composition this way. Then I thought adding silhouettes to this would open it up a bit more and allow some variation (I think rating just a shadows challenge would be a bit boring). Good idea?

I like this idea...I also thought about patterns when I looked at some of the photos. Like repeated patterns? In nature...in architecture...in life? What do you think? Or has it been done?

"repeated patterns".....is that the same thing? lol...oh well, you guys know what I mean. Hey....it's 3 am and I can't sleep here. :)

this is a challenge idea i would support.

i would also maybe expand it to include 'the play of light and shadows'

Nice idea - I thin k there may be 2 challenges here. Open up shadowws to be "light and shadows" like magnetic suggests and have another challenge of just silhouettes. The narrower the subject, the more creativity it could spark off.

I think that's the hardest thing to get right in picking a topic. Really broad, general topics ("People" or "Landscapes") do nothing for me. Really specific topics ("shoot an open dictionary sitting on a table") lead to 100 extremely similar photos. The topics so far have been very good for sparking ideas, yet leaving room for creativity.
