Depending on what you want to do with it. Plan extensive hikes, make, print, or see terrain for places, setup, upload, download waypoints, routes, etc..
I have been using TOPO! (national geographic) for a very long time and suits my needs pefectly. I can plan my backcountry hikes, print them as needed, uploa, download, hook up the laptop and get realtime, much more.
I also use GPSBabel (on my Mac-also for WinDoze, I think) to convert waypoints, upload and download waypoints and routes.
GPSVisualizer has some online stuff, waypoint conversion online, maps, etc.
Also Google Earth ain't so bad..and getting better.
