This was my first edit which broke every rule in the expert editing ruleset. I know you didn't think there were rules but I found 'em and broke 'em.

This is the legal version, considering the huge learning curve it involved and some major flaws I'm really pleased with how it was received.

My entry : didn't do as well as I thought it would but I have this outtake that I have become more and more attracted to, I was just curious what about the photo people don't like. I guess it is one of those you hate it or you love it ones. Here is the outtake:

I much prefer the second shot.

They are both very amazing photos. The one you entered is slightly scary; your outtake has a bit of humour to offset the surrealism. Beyond the mystery of which is better by dpc voter standards is the harder question of what you want to say. I think your entry is the more profound, and more subtle in the editing.

See, this is where I'm going to be kicking myself!!! You can't even guess how much I went back and forth on this...I knew which ever one I picked probably wouldn't be the right one!! Thanks so much Wildcard!

i was disappointed in how my photo did.

i love the image and i'm thrilled about how it came out, but i can't help but see all the caucasian hair entries and find some relative lopsidedness on this subject.

my entry:

outtakes:

my virtually unedited insect entry did better than this one.

Jason...I actually really like the bottom one! It's really beautiful. If you could define the hair with some more individual strands...various shades of her natural color (kind of what they blue ribbon image did, but, not to that extent)...excellent.

UNNNNbelievable. "I think my image did poorly because my subject was black"

Get real for crying out loud (pun intended).

ETA: It is crap like that that is the reason racial strife won't go away, IMO.

actually. . .i didn't say that my photo didn't do well because my subject was black. i said there weren't too many entries involving people of color.

i don't see anything wrong with pointing it out, honestly.

racial strife has absolutely nothing to do with any statement i made.

Nadia...I went and left comments on your image. And I checked to see what I gave you on this...a 7. Your image was good...but, it wasn't perfect and I think it should have maybe scored a little higher than the 6.02 avg...not much higher. This has nothing to do with whether the image reflected a person of color or not. It was in your execution.

There is an area above the pick (yes, I recognize that it is a pick) and below the pick that is not consistant with the rest of the hair...it is blurred. If you are doing a silhouette...then everything should be black, including his shirt....those little bits of lit areas on his shirt are distracting. You could have turned the pick a little more straight so that it didn't look like an asparagus, as pointed out. And, your title refers to the man, not the picture (since the silhouette is black)...and I was not keen on that.

Let's not turn this into a racial issue...it has nothing to do with it. It's how you could have improved upon your image.

again, i never once blamed my score on racism.

i'm happy to take my lumps with everyone else as far as the quality of the image goes, but i won't be badgered into saying it's wrong to point out that the majority of the entries were caucasian.

it's not like it's a secret that some people are black and some people are white. jesus.

Why would this topic even cross your mind...in the same breath as "I am disappointed with how my photo did".

I will not comment any further on this topic, as some people never realize what implications their words have...and how other's perceive what they have said.

No...it's not a secret that some people are black and some are white. It's just a secret as to what that has to do with your score. jesus.

Didn't enter this, but if I could have re-created this shot I would have loved to have seen how it would have scored. I think it fit the challenge! :-)
