I'd like to put together a 'photography hike' in Arizona for January. I was initially thinking of somewhere in the Superstitions. This would be a pretty easy hike, so we can bring our camera gear. :-) Bring along spouses if they are interested also.

Anyone game?

Make it next week and I'm in. Will be visiting in-laws in Tuscon. I'm taking two cameras with 640 megs of memory cards. I think we'll probably end up taking some day hikes around Mt. Lemon.

I've heard Mt. Lemmon is beautiful... sadly I also heard a lot of it is scarred from the fires a couple months ago. Still should be lots of photo opportunities there :-)

Not sure that we'll be able to make it to Tucson next week, but if you are going to be up in the Phoenix area with some time for hiking around, the Superstitions (east of Mesa) are incredible! The shots in my portfolio don't do it justice.

I got some interesting photos last year around Cimarron, NM. after the fires in the Sangre de Christo's. The fire was tragic, but the new life springing up from the ashes provided nice photo opportunities.

I'll bet it provided terrific photo oppportunities. I'll have to go up North next year to see what kind of regrowth has taken place after our devasting fires from last summer.

I would love to visit Arizona! hmmm I can visit if someone lets me use there frequent flier miles or gives me a round trip ticket! (kidding I am a dreamer) Take some good pics and show us I'll take some of this side of the states in the south too and we can compare.

Tina,

OK, but I would have to wear a brown bag over my head so that people will not recognize me from my picture on the wall in the post office or at FBI headquarters. One silly little chain saw murder and people get all bent out of shape.

Here is a partial list of Arizona DPCers who have submitted images in challenges I am aware of:

rcrawford, BNC, briphoto, Annida, backslash, jetstar, toeknee, ebuelna, zeissman, mattpga, ssonnentag, cosmichaiku, robeeena, hblake, and cnobre

I am sure there are others that we don't know about. We might consider emailing the ones we are aware of.

Jetstar and rcrawford have both won blue ribbons in challenges. Roger has the most ribbons of anyone. He is disgusting that way.

Perhaps we could kill two birds with one stone.

We could we lure Roger(rcrawford) and Brenda (BNC) Crawford into the Superstitions under the false promise we had found the Lost Dutchman's gold mine. Then we could ditch them and they would wander aimlessly for years under the influence of gold fever and not submit any more images to DPC. The rest of us would then have a better chance of winning.

What do you think of that idea?

Hello, I live in Arizona. I live in Tucson. I did not know so many people on the site in AZ!

Hi Paul!

Welcome to DPC. There are a few folks in AZ active at DPC. You will want to look at the profiles for rcrawford, briphoto, BNC and jetstar to see some in the Phx area that are active.

Grand Canyon ; Supers are awesome and alot easier to hike in winter , spring is best w/ flowers . Weaver's Needle an easy day hike & if you have more time I'd suggest Miner's Needle as well.Other great spots that require 4-wd are Fish Creek or Upper La Barge , these also require entry from Apache Trail which provides photo - op's of lakes as well . Oh , don't forget Roger's Trough ! Creekside hike w/ Indian ruins from 1400 a.d. , great day hike just pay close attention to cairns .Just a suggestion , make a weekend of it , there's so much !!!

Steve,

Plan sounds good to me... now we need ideas to lure rcrawford and BNC :-)

kreybar - Welcome to DPC! There are 2 pictures of the indian ruins from Rogers Trough in my portfolio - not sure if they do it justice though. That trail is a bit too much for those that don't hike much (or at all). Miners Needle via Dutchman Trail is a great hike. Weavers Needle is a great hike, but might be a bit much for those that do not hike a lot. Once we get a good idea on who might be joining us and from where they reside, I'll start looking at trails and put out some options.

I'll be up at the Grand Canyon in March... my husband is hiking rim to river to rim (out and back from south rim) and I'll be up on top for a photography day.

I'd love some frequent photography hikes, we spend lots of time in the Supes and the more company the better. :-)

Welcome to DPC Paul! Looking forward to seeing your photos from the Tucson area! :-) If you haven't already, make sure to also check stdavidson's portfolio - he's got some great work in there as well.

You do know that you can search the profiles for people who have "AZ" in their location, right? And even for those that chose to spelled out "Arizona"? =)

Kevin,

Welcome to DPC. You have any pictures from up at the canyon you have posted anywhere? If so, I'd sure like to see them.

I have a few AZ shots in my DPC portfolio and AZ shots in PBase galleries at:
//www.pbase.com/azleader

You will have to rummage a little to find stuff on my PBase, but it is organized sensibly.

Steve,

I can send emails to those folks in Arizona...
12/11/2003 01:50:33 PM · #17
OK Tina...

Be sure to tell them folks to bring their six-shooters and snake bit kits. I hear'd the Apaches are on the warpath again an' snakes up there are meaner than... well, snakes.

I is thinkin' Bruce (scrum8) suggested he would be hankerin' to go any time after this week. I spect you were thinkin' of January anyways.

Remember, mums the word on the Crawford plan. We don't want thems ta find out nothin'.

Don't invite no law enforcement officers ifn' you can help it. I'd hate fer there to be another killin'.

Well, I gotta skedaddle back to my hideout.

I just can't come up with anything good in response, Steve :-)

If I understood correctly I thought scrum8 would only be in Arizona for about a week... I just won't have time for an organized gathering in that time before the holidays. An impromptu hike in the Supes I'll usually always have time for though :-)

12/11/2003 03:06:29 PM · #19
Yep, we'll only be down for a week. I generally can't get everyone off their collective dead butts for anything as extensive as the Canyon, Crater, or Supes, but there are good photo ops in the canyons coming off of Mt. Lemmon. We already did all the tourist stuff in the last few visits. My wife's aunt has a real nice place out on Wrightstown Road that has a walking path through several acres of desert plants they transplanted and cultivated over 50 years. Hopefully I can get photos of the Quail and Road Runners also.

Hey guys,

It's been very busy and I haven't spent much time at DPC. I'm really missing it, but will probably have to hold out until after the Holidays.

I would love to join you guys in the Superstitions, however I have a bum knee that requires surgery (debuting whether or not to do it- long term is not good for this surgery).

I have hiked up there many years ago, great place to photos but there is too much up and down for my knee.

You guys should have a great time. Maybe we can do another trip sometime where there is less up and down on trails.

My son and I went to Vulture Mine outside of Wickenburg. It's an old abandon gold mine with some very interesting stuff. There are some websites you can check out with a Google search of Arizona Ghost Towns, Vulture City. There is a couple of pictures in my profile. Haven't had time to edit all of them yet.

I hope you enjoy the Superstitions and find the Lost Dutchman Mine.

Hi John,

Good to hear from you in this thread! :-) I hope to hear from all Arizona DPC'ers to find out what the desires and capabilities of everyone are. Then, I can start planning some outings that will at some point appeal to everyone :-) Not sure what trail we'll do in the Supes, but it won't be anything really severe. If you can't join us for that, I'd love to also plan a Phoenix Zoo (and/or the 2 Wild Animal Parks - East Side and West Side) photography outing.

Stay in touch! :-)

(Good Luck with that knee!)

Hi Tina,

The Phoenix Zoo or the Wildlife Park would be a great ones. I'd be in for that.

Okay Steve I'm on to you. We would love to join you all but remember I have a GPS so I will be hard to lose!

I’ve taken some time off from photography to concentrate on my other hobby of woodworking.

I just completed This and Close-up table as a Christmas gift for my wife.

My 21 year-old son is getting a Canon Powershot A70 for Christmas and he is going to join DPC too and he would like to come along.

Just let us know where and when.

P.S. Congratulations on your first ribbon Steve, it was overdue and I’m sure we will see more.

Holy Man Roger! That table is incredible! My hubby would like to start building furniture too.

I'll be sure to let you know when and where and I look forward to meeting you and your son (hopefully your wife too) :-)

Since getting the Canon I've let go of the Sony long enough for Daryl to get his hands on it... I keep hoping he'll join DPC also...

Roger,

The table is beautifully well crafted... just like your photography.
