Anyone out there know if Nikon is coming out with a new DSLR within the next year or so?
08/18/2007 01:06:35 PM · #2
Do I know that? No. Do I expect that? Yes.

Nikon has to answer the Mark III and 40D when it comes out.

There has been talk of a D3X forever, so I place no stock in most rumors. But Nikon MUST do something soon or all the pro's will go Canon, if they haven't already...

The forever rumors have shortened, as Thom Hogan says that Asian media have already been notified.

It's now generally thought that Nikon is going to up the game by releasing the D3 and D300 at the same time.

Photography Bay has a pretty good roundup on all the best rumor-mongering.

Oh, we should also have an announcement by friday, supposedly.

If they don't hurry up with the 1:1 sensor I am switching to canon. I sent Nikon an email stating just that. I mean really if they don't answer the MKIII & 5D, which is what 3 years old already, I am done.

:-(

I'm not quite ready to jump ship, but if Nikon does not answer soon and with something of significance, I just might do the same. But I have hope that Nikon will step it up in the right way soon.

well, at least wait until the end of the month, we'll know whether they screwed up again soon.

Punk! Haha. I'm actually really happy with my D200, I just want the future to be promising. At Canon, they keep going up while Nikon (to an extent) has been staying still. If Nikon makes a big move that eases my mind, I'll stay a Nikonian. There are many small things about most Canon cameras that I've used that I hate. Nothing on my Nikons that I have "hated", just that annoyed me.

We'll see. Right now I'm at the perfect place to switch if I am going to because I'm not heavily invested in lenses yet. But I'm going to wait and see what Nikon brings to the table.

If I didn't have so much Nikon glass I'd already have a 5D... but alas... the lenses cost way to much...

I would have absolutely no qualms about buying a 5d, a 16-35, 24-70, and a 70-200 if I could swing it. Even if Nikon did release something better in the near term, I'd be sitting pretty for a long, long time. However, I'd really miss CLS.

Looking at all the rumors, seems like two new camera's coming. D3 and either D200x or D300.Lots of talk about a full frame sensor. I thought Nikon was firm about not going full frame. Plus what about all those DX lenses?

what about em?

I really hope they go full frame. I never thought it made a difference until I actually looked through the view finder on a film Nikon SLR (F10 I think?). I got lost in there. Now I'm thinking about some wide angle lenses and I don't really want the DX version especially if a full frame is on the horizon.

Full frame with a good sized view finder? I don't care if its only 1 MP I'd buy it.

:)

addendum to previous: The only DX lens I own is the kit lens. The other two I own would work nicely (hopefully) on a Nikon with a full frame sensor. The kit lens would need to be replaced with an other all purpose walk-around lens.

DX lenses only work with DX sized sensors... not on film or full frame.

You could say the same about EF-S lenses, though, and Canon's doing just fine.

Exactly. That's why I don't understand people who say Nikon will never go Full Frame because they have the DX line of lenses. At some point, Nikon will be forced to go Full Frame to compete whether they want to or not.

I've been avoiding buying any DX lenses for that reason alone. Like Citadel, the only DX lens I have is the kit lens from when I bought my D70 back in the day. I have been avoiding them since then anticipating that Nikon will release something Full Frame or 1.1-1.3 crop soon.

I agree.
I have been saving up for some time and in need of a upgrade! I'll give Nikon until September 1st. If they haven't at least a official announcement. I will sell my Nikon gear and glass.... *gasp* for Canon :(

Nikon already lost so much of their "pro-market" I really don't want to see them lose their "prosumor" market as well.

I mean those Canon skin tones look so nice!

BTW: I am not trying to bash Nikon... but if Nikon doesn't offer the right tools for the job then I HAVE TO look elsewhere!

Question is from whom will Nikon get a full frame sensor? Rumor has it that Sony is coming out with their own full frame camera in the near future. Will they want to sell to Nikon and increase their competition in that market? Maybe not. So who's left to buy one from? Kodak? Panasonic?

eta: This seems to put Nikon at a distinct disadvantage since they'd have to buy from a third party and may not be able to put out a competatively priced product, or one that was as well priced as the 5D when it came out.

You may find this interesting, though it really doesn't tell much about future products. Nikon Full color sensor?
