LENS:
Canon 28-105mm 3.5-4.5 II USM

I picked this lens up as a replacement for my 350D kit lens.
Now I will acknowledge and freely admit my complete noobish ignorance with two areas of this lens:

I/R
How is this used? What is its purpose.

the Distance dial.
I could guess but I want to make the most use of this lens.

I searched on this lens and could only find it as a recommended lens but nothing about these features. I also went to Canon to find answers and was still left in the dark. There were no manuals to download either. (//www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=149&modelid=7442)

Could someone help me out...
thanks in advance.

I know on my lens that has a distance dial you can manual focus even in autofocus mode. I think this is referred to as continuous full-time manual focus.

... and found this using Google:
