I've not been part of the DPL before. However, I'm starting to be interested, particularly to get team feedback before entering challenges. As I start getting comments during a challenge, I'm always telling myself, "Yes, I knew that, why didn't I fix it before submitting?" :)

Here's a few questions...

How serious do you have to be to be in the DPL? Is there a minimum number of challenges you need to enter during the season? I'm currently entering maybe 3 challenges a month, which is about the level I'm comfortable with.

How do I find a good team, or do I just join the pool and wait, like the kid on the school soccer team bench? :) Anyone want to pick me? I don't want to be on a nasty team full of horrible people, so if you're nasty, please don't reply.

Do teams tend to be people around the same level? I would guess so, but I just wanted to ask and see.

Hey. This is actually my first time entering the DPL as well. I'm really quite excited. If you had posted this sooner I would've invited you to my team, but we're all full, however if someone decides to leave suddenly I would be more than happy to invite you.

Anyways. You should enter as many challenges as you possibly can in the opening month. The more challenges you enter. The better the chance of your team succeeding.

The only way to find a team is put yourself on the free agent pool and hope that you will be chosen :)

You need to enter two challenges a week. I don't understand the opening month thing. Two challenges a week, anything short of that is slacking.

I heard this from someone else :P so i'm just quoting what they told me

I so wish there could be teams with twice as many members as usual (whatever the "usual" number is). That way, we could take turns entering and not HAVE to do two challenges a week.

you need 7 members on your team to participate I believe. I'm not sure if you are allowed to have less. But yeah, two challenges a week is rough. It's really stressful and difficult to make sure you have half-decent entries twice a week.

Not less..... MORE members! If you had 14 members taking turns, each person would only need to do one challenge a week.

Hmm, I thought routerguy666 was kidding about 2 challenges per week, but everyone else seems to be in agreement. I couldn't find anything in the rules about minimum number of challenges. I think 2 challenges per week would rule me out. I have weeks that are too busy, and I don't even have time to pick up the camera.

I would have to snapshot rubbish just to make quota, and I'm afraid that would take the enjoyment out of it all.

Oh wait, Beetle's comments made me think...is it two submissions per week per member, or two challenges per week for the team?

Weekly, it helps to have at least 4 people enter a challenge so that none of the contributing scores are zero. Just look for a more laid back team if you can't enter every week.

every week they take the top 4 individuals scores and average them. If you entered in to 2 challenges then that gives you 2 chances to make one of those 4 spots. If you team only entered 3 photos then the 4th top spot would be a zero.

So the more times you enter the more chances you have to get a better score. But Id be cheezed if one of my team didn't enter at least one a week.

Something is not adding up here...

I've checked the profiles of many people in the DPL, and there are quite a few who do not enter 2 anywhere near 2 per week. It seems quite common for them to only enter 3 per month.

From my understanding, each team needs 4 scores per week. 7 people per team means roughly half the team needs to enter each week. If everyone enters 2 per week, thats 14 entries, which is WAY more than the team needs.

However, if everyone enters 3 per month, thats 21 per month, which is more than enough to get minimum score quota, right? What am I missing? :)

Aha, so maybe it's an unofficial rule that some teams have to enter 2 per week. This is fine then. OK, I understand that the more entries there are, the better the chances of getting top spots, but I was asking about minimum requirements for the league.

Ok, so if your team wants a commitment of 2 per week, don't pick me. :)

As for getting minimum team quota, there's always the option of snapping something quickly to get a few points when the team knows there aren't 4 shots in that week, although it would be a slack team indeed where only 3 people could shoot in a given week. :)

as a general rule (not set by DPC or the DPL league) ... teams prefer that members enter at least 1 challenge per week ... but most prefer that team members enter one open challenge as well as the member challenge that week .. gives us the best chance at gathering the highest scores that way ... we (team stranger) had awesome participation throughout the entire season and ended up shooting for the division C championship ... we lost by a fraction of a point ... but it sure wasn't for lack of participation from our amazing team ...

Basically, the POINT of DPL (when it was formed as unofficial WPL) was to encourage more participation. It was hoped that most team members would enter twice a week, that activity would increase across the boards.

For many it's a much-needed kick in the pants, I think; a lot of people tend to cherry-pick their challenges around their comfort zone, so they are never really "challenged", if you catch my drift? Committing to a team is committing to shooting every week, without fail, if humanly possible, and this in turn commits the photographer to exploring things s/he might otherwise have passed on.

It's pretty cool :-) The feedback from team members is nice too, but the really cool thing is the "be there and play" mentality. Another thing we (the site) do that accomplishes similar goals is the unofficial "30 Day" challenges.

And remember, submitting a "bad" photo cannot hurt your team. It either is, or is not, one of the top four for that week in the team scoring. Low-scoring images just plain don't count, unless your team shoots ONLY 4 (or fewer) entries that week. It's OK to take chances, stretch your wings, risk a little.

I'm still curious as when I can actually create my team. I think i can only officially make it when the season begins.

That's correct, though you can line up your teammates in advance if you have certain people in mind. Keep an eye on the forum to see when registration opens up.

You don't have to be a member, but it increases your chances to get picked for a team.

The DPL is essentially dormant. We had one season and that was it. It's coming back someday, but no one knows when.

I can't remember how to get into the free agent pool, but I wouldn't worry about it right now. I'm sure there will be plenty of discussion in the forums when it's going to start up again.
