Just got done watching Captain Phillips, it was a decent movie, not sure why it is up for an academy award, I'd give it a 7/10

Here are some others I have seen recently:

Enders game: 7/10 worth seeing but not as good as the book
Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2: 5/10 kids loved it and laughed all the way through, I tolerated it sort of.
Austinland: 4/10 my friend said it was hilarious so I may have been expecting too much, but even then it is just too stupid to be funny.
Prisoners: 6/10 just meh, didn't hate it but didn't really like it that much either
Hobbit: 8/10 all around good movie but I still don't like the series as much as I did Lord of the Rings
Catching fire: 8/10 for those of us who have read the book it really stayed true to the book and brought the characters to life, not for everyone, but if you are a fan of the books I think you will enjoy the movie. By the way I loved the twilight books but hated the movies.

If you're game for more fainting try Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father or Happiness (1998) if you haven't already.

We taped it, I took a few shots at it, gave up. Cool book, though...

Safe Haven - 8/10

If you're into the sappy love stories, then this one is for you. It's algo got some 'suspense' as there's part of the story that you find out slowly along the way.

I had to watch it again, the second time with subtitles. It was better seeing it again.

For me (Cormac McCarthy is) the best living American writer. I think I've read everything he's done; everything moderately well known anyway. The Sunset Limited was a surprise, given that he handles dialogue in such an apparently offhand manner in the Pretty Horses trilogy in particular. Sunset Limited is all dialogue (being a play) and it's some of the most perfectly judged & paced dialogue I've ever read … it's 'Elmore Leonard' quality :)

Hah! You're another Elmore Leonard lover? I'm absolutely in awe of his talent with dialogue and pacing. What a loss his passing was.

Another Elmore Leonard fan here. I've loved verything i've read of him so far. Which isn't a huge amount but he wrote so many. My brother is a big fan and got me into him. He had a about three or four shelves full of the paperbacks. Hard to know where to start!

McCarthy is one of my favourite of my favourite writers also. I first read The Road and was shellshocked after that. I went out and bought another by him straight afterwards and tucked in. Turned out to be Blood Meridian and whilst they are, in a ways, very different books, one seamlessly seemed to fit into the other. Magic.

Haven't seen many films recently. I got halfway through Oblivion but fell asleep. Might have another go.

I'm all about the HBO tv series True Detective at the moment. Seriously the best tv i've seen since, well, Breaking Bad i guess. Superbly scripted and acted and it looks amazing. True Detective has the added bonus of being hugely influenced by some of my favourite obscure weird writers. Apparently Robert Chambers 1885 weird fiction classic, The King In Yellow, is shooting up the bestseller lists due to the show. I didn't think i'd see that day!

It's shaping up into one of my favourite shows ever. It is dark though. Very dark.

I have to say that thinking about it after watching it, there was much to admire. It's one of those films you have to work VERY hard to stay with (Bear, we almost gave up twice). And the imagery was superb. But I think you have to know beforehand that it's going to be one of those movies. We settled in thinking it was a typical entertaining story, and it's as far from that as it is possible to be. Very, very, VERY complicated and dense.

+1 Both of the stars/producers are superb in this. Also love the photography used during the opening titles/credits.

Indeed. And another thing about the titles- the music. I've been a fan of The Handsome Family for years so it's great to see them used on this. I'm in the slightly odd position of a mainstream television show seemingly mind suck all of my favourite writers and music out of my brain and turn them into telly. Weird when that happens. Luckily the telly show is fantastic.

I love it when you say "telly" :)

:) I do like watching the telly occasionally. Unless it's one of the very rare times when i go to the pictures to see a film.

+1 Love the HBO stuff....true detective is great! I started watching Breaking Bad right from the start before it got all trendy to watch!! I seem to be going backwards in time with my viewing! very little movie watching but buying box sets of old TV series.....Last year a watched the complete series of "The Wire' which is fantastic! and now I'm making my way through season 1-7 of "Homicide life on the street"

"The Intouchables" - 8/10

Oh how I wish I understood French! A wonderful movie, limited a bit by having to use subtitles. But many wonderful laugh out loud moments.

I saw The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug today (it finally opened in Japan yesterday).3D version only available for Japanese dubbed. Fortunately, I prefer 2D, Japanese subtitled. It was pretty good, pretty long and pretty unbelievable in parts (defying the laws of physics in the barrel escape with elves and orcs jumping all over the place.)
Now the next thing is to see the Walter Mitty film, which is opening in a couple of weeks and which I learnt is called LIFE! in Japan (otherwise I might have missed it). "In this film, there is "!" in it."

Rush 7/10

A glimpse into the formula one racing world of the mid 70's. The competition and personal differences of Niki Lauda and James Hunt form the center of this film. This is shot with unrecognizable actors and done in a semi-documentary style. Not usually my cup of tea, but quite engaging nonetheless.

Lincoln -7/10

Quite interesting story about Lincoln, although the political views of both the Democrats and Republicans in those days were exactly opposite of what I expected. But I really enjoyed the movie!

Limits of Control - 6/10

Great cinematography and locations in Spain, but it's really slow and hard to figure out the plot.

*not a movie, but a series: House of Cards - 8/10 (so far)

I binge-watched all of season 1 last year. Just watched first two episodes of season 2 yesterday. Very intense. One thing about the show is that has a hypercynical view of politicians. Not one is incorruptible and they will all stop at nothing to further their careers. If our government is even half as twisted as this view, we are all screwed.

...so, that's my take-away from the show so far: we are all screwed.
