5 Broken Camers (2011) - A documentary on a Palestinian farmer's chronicle of his nonviolent resistance to the actions of the Israeli army.

Narco Cultura (2013) - To a growing number of Mexicans and Latinos in the Americas, narco traffickers have become iconic outlaws and the new models of fame and success. They represent a pathway out of the ghetto - a new form of the American Dream, fueled by the war on drugs. NARCO CULTURA looks at this explosive phenomenon from within; cycles of addiction to money, drugs and violence that are rapidly gaining strength on both sides of the US/Mexican border.

Both of these documentaries are very disturbing and shocking.

The Lego Movie - 8/10

Finally, a movie without any skinny tweenagers. YAY!!!

Morgan Freeman + Liam Neesan make this movie a joy to see with the kids!

Catchy theme song! Memorize the lyrics and annoy your kids! ;-D

Alas, next week's movie?...more Skinny Tweenagers in Divergent...*sigh*

Gravity - 6/10

Not much of a story, but the visual effects really grab you. What I liked most about the film is that it does a good job of making you feel in awe of what it must be like to be in space and how vulnerable and seemingly insignificant you are out there. There wasn't much to the characters, nor the acting, IMO.

History of Future Folk - 8/10

History of an alien bluegrass band. A fun movie, just don't think too hard about the science.

+1, er I guess I mean -1. A truly terrible movie. On the other hand, 20 Feet From Stardom was an enjoyable documentary ... starts to drag a little towards the end, but interesting insight into the music biz and the people who helped make you love the songs you love. 7.5/10

I loved the music, I'd go for a 9 if there were more of it in the movie...

The World's End (2013)

(did I post this one already?)
8/10, funny. Pegg and Frost are a crazy duo.

Last week I caught up with one of Werner Herzog's documentaries.
Happy People: A Year in the Taiga (2010)
Highly recommended.

Btw if you haven't seen Encounters at the End of the World (2007),... beautiful no-penguin documentary. There is actually one penguin but he lost his mind.

I watched that last year. I don't understand the title since I didn't think the people looked particularly "happy". While it's true they live a life far removed from much of the modern world, they seemed more akin to a "lost tribe" than anything else. It was an interesting film, for sure.

Pandora's Promise (documentary) - 8/10

Surprising views on the topic of nuclear power by several hardcore environmentalists. A must see if you are one who claims to be concerned about global warming and CO2 emissions. I thought it would be eye-opening to most people on all sides of the environmental debates.

Frozen - 3/10

WAY TOO MUCH SINGING! Maybe I'm getting old and intolerant of musicals, but this one had just too much singing in the beginning and the story was just meh. Riley gave it one thumb up, one down, so "Meh" from him (intended audience), too.

Life of Pi. 10/10. Amazingly well done acting and CGI, didn't detract from the complexities of the story.

I would give it about a 6/10. The family liked it, but didn't think it was a great movie, although it looks like it is going to become the highest grossing animation of all time.

Prisoners - 7/10

I enjoyed it, but a few things were too predictable.

Non-Stop

A lot of action, at times the story/occurences seems a bit far fetched, but you never look at your watch - time just flies by. Didn't regret watching it at all. 7/10.

Snowpiercer (2013)
Wanted to like it but didn't. Just because it's a bunch of shallow, dumb nonsense pretending to be an engaging SF movie. Pointless violence and pointless train rush. The cast really tried to make this one believable but without any character development, just couldn't do it. I'm surprised by the high rating on IMDB.

American Hustle - 8/10
Didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. Christian Bale is just amazing.

*scratching head* must be a very, very, very VERY different Frozen from the movie I saw by that title with teenagers stranded on a skilift in Colorado. That had absolutely no musical scenes and was more like a 9/10.

Divergent

6/10

A simplistic coming of age movie with a vaguely believable story premise . Thank goodness the action packed storyline moves rather quickly given the 2 hours and 20 minutes length. (Unlike the silly Brad Pitt Zombie movie. I really suffered through that one...ugh!)

Apparently, some scenes and characters are missing from the movie that gave the plot more depth in the book.

The devoted tweens ranted about this topic for a while but still rated the movie...9.5/10

I just wasted perfectly good dollars on "Pompeii".

I have been to Pompeii and find the story behind it very interesting, hence I just had to see this movie (especially since it was in 3D, which I love).

I didn't know it would be mostly an excuse for blood thirsty violence.

Pretty much the whole movie was blood and gore and "action", with nearly total disregard to historical facts re the volcano/Pompeii. One major chase scene was almost laughably stupid in so many ways, that I'm going to do my very best to forget this idiotic movie, and concentrate on my memories of a very educational visit to Pompeii.

Score: 3/10 - all three points are for the epic scenes in 3D, even though they really made little sense if you ever learned about Pompeii.

This week tweenager choice?....Noah

Surprisingly, not a nap movie.

Life...Death...Love...Agony...Betrayal...Justice.

Well, that about covers it.

7/10

Next week? Captain America...*sigh*
