Hey folks, while I love my new 40D to bits, one thing it does annoys me a little. When I am downloading images through the canon utilities BS that came with it, every 20-40 images it tells me the camera has disconnected and to try again. The camera has not disconnected, it is still on and prefectly connected, I can still see it in windows explorer. When I ignore the canon utilities BS and hit transfer images on the camera, it takes forever. While I realize that the RAW files are bigger, I don't think it should take 45 seconds to a minute to download one file. In fact, when I plug the CF card into my old camera - the sony alpha - it downloads them just as fast as it downloaded shots taken by the alpha.

I am thinking it may be time to invest in a card reader, anyone got any input or suggestions to make?

I've been using a USG 2.0 card reader for years. They're cheap and quick and I have yet to find a better way than click and drag...

Good luck;

So stated my wedding photographer when I saw her at another wedding yesterday. However, does anyone else have any suggestions other than another complete hardware change?

The Fastest transfer device I have ever used. A full card in seconds.

Noticed it said it was discontinued. I have seen them in a few places still though.

I have only ever downloaded via cardreaders - (all the other cables are still in their original packaging) you can buy card readers for very little money nowadays.

Try these.

//www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/102-4583400-8618506?initialSearch=1&url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=sandisk+cf+card+reader&Go.x=13&Go.y=16

just to add that I really like the device CEJ mentions, but I son't know where to get them and the Sandisk equivalent gets fairly poor write up's in terms of speed.

Since Windows explorer can see the camera as another drive why not just drag and drop onto the computer?

Better yet, as already suggested, use a card reader (and drag and drop).

I'm still using the SanDisk card reader I bought at Staples about four years ago. I think it was about #14.00. I've never downloaded from any of my cameras. I downloaded my first card from my 40D yesterday -- almost 4 gigs in just a couple of minutes. I've also used the Windows Explorer cut and past and/or drag and drop method, too. About the same speed.

Yep, that's the way to do it!

While your problem is annoying it really is better to use a card reader...plugging the camera in to the computer puts extra strain on your battery. The batteries only can be charged so many times, why shorten the life of your battery when it's unnecessary and slower than using a card reader?

See this thread.

Using a Firewire card reader, I was pulling a gigabyte of data off of a 4G Sandisk card every 90 seconds. In just 360 seconds it could have downloaded an entire 4Gb of data.

is the camera going to sleep?

Another vote for a card reader...the only thing I have ever used to transfer my shots to the computer.

This doesn't sound right. Mine's never done it. Get it checked out. And if it is "normal" i'm sure they'll have a firmware update to fix it soon.

It could be related to a camera setting. When connected to the computer it should be set never to go to sleep, especially if you're uploading a large number of images.

My files are a little bigger than the ones coming out of the 40D. For these I prefer a FireWire reader which, in real time, is significantly faster than a hi-speed USB 2.0. SanDisk and Lexar make one.

No the camera is not going to sleep. First thing I checked.

I have the 40d and have not experienced that issue. I download about 40-50 images at a time.

It could be something with your computer (i.e motherboard and how it handles usb port) and not the camera. Have you tried or experienced this on other computers?
09/23/2007 07:58:56 PM · #21
that brings up another thing, do you have any other usb devices running at the same time you are trying to upload your images? It could be something to do with the usb controller.

try it on a different computer..
If it still does the same thing then try a card reader.
