Has anyone got experience of the Sigma lens as i'm considering purchasing it to add to my Nikon 18-70 kit lens.I would like to do macro photography as well as action and portrait work. The only other lens i've considered is the Nikon 70-200 f 2.8 vr,which is twice the price.Any advice would be welcome especially as to wether the Nikon is twice as good.

I got Nikon and I'm crazy happy with it. I don't think any Nikon user would give it up for anything.

I've got the canon mount of that lens and it is fantastic. The Nikon is stabilised no? that is probably where the price difference comes in, and because they are the camera makers they think they can bump the price on brand. I know there isnt an amazing amount of quality difference between the sigma and canon versions... not that is worth double the price anyway.

My only real concern apart from the price is the close focusing.Nikons nearest focus point is 5 feet,Sigma is 100cm

I recently got the sigma, and i can tell you that for half the price, it is just absolutely incredible, not ever even thought about upgrading to the nikon vr. I think you would be completely satisfied.

No, not really, I friend tested two new 70-200mm Sigmas and were both very bad, that's where nikkor's quality control(and price) comes in.

That is only a difference of 2 feet and they are zooms not macros. :-)

The VR stand for Vibration Reduction wich gets you at least 2 stops hand held. VR is like the Canon's IS. The Nikon optics and build quality are superior and resale value is much higher. My .02 go with the Nikon it is one of the best lenses ever made.

I have the sigma, I was amazingly happy with it to begin with, but I've started to notice that it only performs really well in perfect light... Once light becomes a little dull, it becomes very difficult to get a clear image from this lens.

I have been using the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 APO MACRO for 1 yr now. Has given excellent service. Very well built also gives nice & very sharp images, but compared to the Nikon the color accuracy & sharpness is still behind the Nikon. So it really depends on your budget, for the price the Sigma is really excellent and allows a 1:3 macro ratio at closest focusing distance. If you have the budget and do not need close up capability , go for the Nikon.

Ok - to those who are suggesting that a user who is by all accounts a starter in the photography field (quoted as having only the kit lens to have this lens added to the equation) to go for exceptional quality ... should we really be telling him to get a lens which goes into the diminishing returns area of expense?? This seems to be a "which lens should i go for next to add to my focal length reach?" not tell me the best lens on the market to do this with... we might as well tell the guy to ditch the nikon and go with a hasselblad!

If you want quality which surpasses the kit lens and be very happy with it (for at least the amount of time it takes you to objectively realise the quality of your images would be better with the nikon version and then realise that the extra expense is something you can do in the future should you really NEED - and that being the operative word - that much better quality) and have some spare cash go for the sigma.

If you want uncompromising quality and the best money can buy - get the nikon version.

You're correct i got the d80 with the 18 70 dx and the battery grip about 18 months ago, unfortunately due to illness i've only used it for about 6 months. The next lens i get has to be the right one and the more i see the Nikon images the more i like it especially as its got the vr.It will hold its value better but i've no intentions of selling it,which is why i only want to do this once.

Well - it is your call after all. You wont be disappointed with quality if you go nikon. I was just trying to put it into perspective.

The answer to your question is YES. I wasted time and effort buying second grade lenses only to find out that it is always best (as long as you can afford it) to buy the best quality glass you can with each lens purchase. You will end up there anyway and glass lasts a lifetime, unlike bodies. Money spent on pro level glass is seldom a mistake. My opinion of course.

The Nikon 70-200 is one of the best pieces of glass Nikon has made. The color and clarity of this lens is outstanding and the VR will get you more like three stops for still subjects. I love the Sigma lenses I have but they do not hold a candle to the Nikon in terms of color clarity. I have the Nikon 80-400 VR also so my 70-200 VR is a duplicate range but I can't quite bring myself to sell it.
