Beautiful! Now I'm just going to HAVE to join the GTG.
03/10/2008 12:12:16 AM · #27
Well the nature reserve is several hours from the breaks...

I tried to google Breaks with not much luck. How long of a drive from Madison Co. (just south of Lexington)? Is this nature reserve (from the pic) in KY or Va? I'm starting to get excited about this GTG. Nervous 'cause I'm quite shy, ... but looking forward to it.

Ok the pic is not from the Nature reserve it is from Breaks interstate park. The Breaks It is on the KY/VA border at Elkhorn City, Ky and Breaks, VA on Pine Mountain. The reserve that everyone is talking about in this thread is (I think) in Franfort. I would say from Richmond you are looking at 3hrs. You would come from Lex to 64 to the Mountain Parkway, through Salyersville to Prestonsburg on 23 to Pikeville. Once in Pikevill follow the signs to Elkhorn city and there will be signs directing you to the Breaks. Be sure to check the weather.

I'll double check the date, but I might also be interested. Gotta run, but I'll check in when I get home.

Looks like just a 3 and half hour drive for us. We may be interested as well.

I think from this view you are looking into Va but there are places you look from one state over into another.

Can some of you say what place you would like to have the gtg. The Nature Reserve in Frankfort or The Breaks in Elkhorn City. Just trying to get an idea on where most people want to gtg.

Thanks!!

Guys I just mentioned the breaks because it is a beautiful Ky site that often gets overlooked. You all decide where you want to go. I did not mean to hijack the thread.

BTW here's another shot from the other night.

Frankfort gets my vote, just since it is closer. But I am flexible.

My votes for Frankfort as well, just b/c its close.....if the majority is closer to the breaks then I'll go there ;)

Frankfort is closer to me and is a possibility. I probably wouldn't make the drive to Elkhorn City.

I think I will be bowing out of the Frankfort GTG. If anyone is interested in going to the breaks sometime let me know and my wife and I could maybe meet you or at least give you good directions.

Was there a decision made regarding a date for this gtg?

Looks like Aimee and I should be there. We can confirm for sure as the date gets closer.

you all are breaking my heart...I wanna come!!! My house it right there in Georgtown too... (insert crying animation here). While you are there you have to stop in and get some Mexican food at Maranda's on I think it's US 60. And if anyone knows how to get to Switzer road (near the falls) you can find this covered bridge:

(which isn't actually red)

ya'll have fun and I hope all the weather holds out for ya.

Can't make it on the 19th, as I'll be headed north (Columbus) not south. I hope you all have a great time though!

I'm out you all! sorry.

Looks like we won't be able to make the trip either. But Aimee and I are still interested in a future GTG.

I have come across a FREE opportunity to go to an EKU sponsored event at Keeneland. It includes a private tour of the stables, a course on reading the racing program and betting strategies and inside seating in the Phoenix Room with a buffett. Only 24 spots were available, so I'm kinda sorta leaning towards going. Of course, it lands on April 19th.

Maybe if you guys get back together at a later date I'd be able to come. It was really a hard decision to pass up my first GTG.

LOL, ok so it seems no one will be able to make it to the April 19th gtg, it would be just me huh?! :)

How about we all start throwing out dates and see which seems to work best for everyone else. I don't have any vacations/travel planned for the next few months so I can be very flexible. Let's just play it by ear!

lol, sorry ashley. Sounds like a lonely GTG. How about mid-May? We may even be able to recruit more members.

So I have a Kentucky waterfall question.

In high school my buddies and I frequented this waterfall.

We called it Flat Rock Falls back then and it was privately owned. We used to jump off it all the time and so would many of the locals. It probably wasn't safe, you kinda had to jump sideways to avoid this one boulder and out enough to avoid some others. I often saw drunk rednecks jump off, sometimes with children in their arms.

A professor that I work with came in to show me some photos he took at a waterfall this week-end and I instantly recognized it. Evidently it's part of a park now and open to the public. When I told him I used to jump off it, he wouldn't believe me... and this is why. [thumb]665504[/thumb]

Has anybody been here before/after they filled it in? Does anybody know why they did that? Seems MORE dangerous to me(if that's why they did it) and definitely not nearly as pretty as it used to be.
