Welcome to the Official Posting Thread. Please upload the original next to the HDR so we can see the difference.

Day 1

This shot was edited using a single RAW file duplicated and heavy curves with multiply layer masked to look like night time dodged and burned. the image directly after tonemapping I no longer have it sorry.

Wow - serious HDR - can we also specify some details such as number of exposures, how far apart, software, + any other pp ??

On this great shot by MAK above I would be more interested to see a copy of the image immediately after tonemapping than the original photo.

This one has been on another thread but i'm quite pleased with it - 3 shots, 2 stops apart each, Photomatix, some d&b

Since we seem to be off to a slow start here I'm going to chuck a couple more questions in -

1. Do you have a preferred method for sharpening in HDR images. My reason for asking is that byesterday we went to Derbyshire and i took loads of landscapes for HDRing for this thread and the results are murky and horrible using USM. But it seems like if I switch to Smart Sharpen they look much better - it seems to suits that very textural HDR hyper real kind of thing.

2. Where do you focus in a HDR landscape - distance, mid, foregorund interest ?

depends really, I try to shoot at f8 if the light allows then after tonemapping the focus seems still good. I use the sharpening tool on noise ninja a lot too. Does seem quiet doesn't it? LOL don't worry it will pick up real soon.

That's curious - i was using f8 - f11 - but everything I read said use f22 so I did yesterday and the results have been not as good.

Give me a chance!!! It's just gone noon here on Sunday and I'm just awake :)

It snowed overnight so there's a world of challenging exposures out there just gagging for HDR....gotta goto school for a meeting but will submit a shot later on.

MAK - bloody cool first shot mate - in fact too cool and good for a first shot :P

A lot of lenses have their 'sweet spot' closer to f8/f11 rather than out there at f22, so you'll often get sharper images if you keep the aperture around there. I tend to use f10/f11 if light permits which is plenty of DoF for landscapes (most of the time). I think if you search the forums there's some techy reasons as to why, but the bottom line as I understand it is that smaller aperture in reality doesn't always mean sharper images.

I also tend to bracket both ISO and aperture when HDRing, just in case (shoot a set at ISO 400, and also a set at wider aperture..2.8 or 4 mostly).

I'm going to shoot something with LOTS of exposure frames today....when I started out doing HDR I did 5 manually, but then discovered AEB and became lazy. For really high range adding extra exposure frames really helps reduce ugly graining in the shadows I find...

That first shot below is ace btw...will comment later on...

I found this last night - free/open HDR software...Picturenaut

I had a quick play with it last night. I really like this histogram and black/white levels changing - really nice and way better than Photomatix or Wukong. Results aren't amazing but it's a pretty handy tool...and free...

I went a bit bananas for Day 1. Had time to kill at school when my supervisor's plane was delayed so shot a few:

High Pass sharpening (under "filters/other" in PS) works extremely well for HDRI...

Ok, so I am new to HDR and have no idea what I am doing. Got me the 40 dollar Dynamic-Photo HDR program and started playing.

I could have smoothed the sky a bit here but this was really a first pass.

[thumb]666456[/thumb]

Dynamic-Photo HDR using 1 JPG in Fake it til you make it mode (Eye Catching setting)
All sliders default except I backed brightness off 2.

Corel PSP12
Clarify (5)
Add/Remove Noise > Median (3)
Highpass Sharpen (radius 10.00 strength 70)
(dupped layer - Soft light) Xero-Graphics Soft Vignette, Clarify (2) applied
Flatten
Perfectum Smoothing (50)

It went something like that...

HDR original

The conditions were not real great for an HDR today but with the water and sky here there was enough contrast too make use of HDR and to bring out the shadows and highlights in the snow. I was just looking at some of the sharpening techinques discussed here and hopefully my later photos will be better. I used Project Wukong for this HDR and then I increased the contrast with levels in PS. This was from 5 exposures (-2,-1,0,1,2) Thanks.

We got an amazing amount of snow today up here in northern Minnesota! It started last night at about 10 p.m. and has not let up hardly at all (except for a few short time slots) and is still blowing hard and snowing now at 9 p.m. a night later. All the snow you see in this photo has come in a 12 hour time slot) overnight from 10 p.m. until this photo was taken at 10 a.m. We already have almost 17 inches on the flat with drifts as high as 5 feet. The vehicles in our driveway are half covered in snow! oh and did I mention ITS AWESOME!

After Before

I truly don't have time to do much by way of taking new pictures everyday, but I will aim to process a bunch. Providing the weather improves (been foggy all weekend), I will try shooting some new stuff later in the week.

Edited the pics. Decided I liked these better.

I do have some new ones but for now I'll chuck this one in - three identical exposures - (I forgot to bracket) - forced through Photomatix by lying and saying they were 2 stops apart - the vignette was a result of the process but I did accentuate it, beach copied to increase symmettry

Single JPG one pass through Dynamic-Photo HDR

I'm Not real crazy about the centered composition here, but the sky was cooperating.

Sorry couldn't resist. HDR from a single RAW file, tonemapped at low level twice, USM with noise ninja
04/07/2008 04:44:28 PM · #25

Trying out MAK's technique from above on an old shot - 1 RAW, tonemapped, multiply layer, d&b - I quite like it - tomorrow I'm gonna try and find something better suited to the style
