Anyone think there'll be new lenses as well? I hope there are. Namely, I hope they AF-Sify some of their D lenses, like the 50mms and the 85mms.

Any thoughts?

The 2 that I saw are tilt shift lenses. Can't remember the focal length but I know they are goign to be very expensive. That is if all the photos flying around are true.

Yes, well I heard, that they will present 5 new products among which there are two new AF-s lenses. It's been rumored that Nikon will release a new 50mm f/1.4 AF-s, because Sigma did the same and a new 300mm f/4 AF-s VR version. But these are complete speculations, don't be surprised if Nikon announces something completely different :).

It has also been rumored that Nikon will release a new flash gun (The SB-900) and two new bodies.

D700 and SB-900 at least. I expect a D3X as well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some AF-S Prime lenses.

I'll wait for some reviews and probably a little hands on time, but I might sell my D3 for the D700. It looks to have all the features I love about the D3 + the features I love about the D200/D300. Now I just need to see the Grip for it. If it has that little AF point selector that the D300 Grip has, it will all but be a done deal.

Would be nice if Nikon would touch the ultra-wide market for cropped sensors, like Sigma did with the 4.5mm, but I guess it seems Nikon is focusing on full-frame now.

It seems kinda funny to me that the D300 really just came out and now there is the D700 (what about the D400? or D3X?). At least I prefer zoom and cropped sensors to full-frame however it bothers me that the D700 will probably be more polished, would be great to be able to upgrade the body and firmware to the D700 and keep the D300 sensor. :)

I haven't followed Nikon and Canon very closely, does it seem that Nikon is all of a sudden in high-gear compared to what it was, as if trying to catch up or build as much of a lead as it can over Canon? Not that there is anything at all wrong with that, just wondering.

I think that Nikon is pushing to catch up. They have sat by for a couple of years now and watched as Canon has had huge success with the the 1Ds series and the 5D. They have finally caught up with Canon in the noise dept and are now focusing on the FF.

The D700 uses the same MB-D10 grip as the D300...

Just look at the D700 as a d300 with FF and some other features. Can get both for about same price as D3, and have a niche for both scenes. Use the d700 for primes, d300 for zooms and cover backup and multi-camera setups at the same time. Same grip, same batteries, so if prices stay the same, for the same $5k, you get 1 d3, or 1d700, 1d300 and save $200 which would cover the price of a grip.

Oh man, that video presentation was really cool, despite not knowing a single word of French!

Anyways, that pisses me off that there's gonna be a new flash! D:< I just bought an SB-800 a couple weeks ago! Looks like I'll be trading it in! Thirty day money back guarantees are the best :)

I passed the video through a video translation program...

"Is the video on, yes? Ok, hello photographers and photographers this is Nikon new D700 body soon to be released. Many features is has but is basically D300 without cropping. It takes very good pictures, you see it is mostly the same body little has changed. We see the round viewfinder classic of Nikon without crop now. Battery life is slightly lower than D300 however flash has slightly faster recycling. Over all it is a good camera built classically and strong. One thing I do not like is the more complicated menu system, some options are now deep inside. It is very strong, I dropped it several times while playing with it and I think it still works but I am not sure. See this is the back again, looks like a D300 doesn't it? Well it is not a D300, I am so happy to be holding it but I do not like this lens, I asked for a fish lens and this one is not that. What else can I say about it. Oh there is no noise at ISO 200, I am very pleased that they have kept it low noise. I think it was a mistake of Nikon to remove liver view and timers, makes the camera less useful but there was lots of complaints about those features to beginning with. Also gone is the weather proofing of the D300 and D3 because of warranty issues and pushing cameras too far."

Just kidding obviously, though if anyone wants to actually translate it, let me know how close I was. ;)

* needed to be a little silly and a lot evil right now, or the other way around. Forgiveness is requested.

Sweet! Where did you reserve it and how much does it cost?
07/01/2008 08:18:28 PM · #17
I "reserved" one too! Actually, I bought an SB-800 about 2 weeks ago and wanted to return it (30 days money back), but the guy at National Camera just said, ya know what? We'll give you the full money back when it comes out even though it's outside 30 days. Sweet!

And I think it's $500. I'm not sure if that's factual or not, though.

Anyone else pissed about this stupid D300 update? Why the hell couldn't they have added the button functionality they gave the D3? That's so frickin stupid! I've been wanted to be able to push a button to switch between my shooting profiles since the damn thing came out! Going into the menus to do it is so clunky.

EDIT: Also, the lens announcements are less than stellar as well... We've known about those since January. Come on Nikon, get with the program and upgrade your frickin D lenses!

At a local brick & mortar. Not sure the price but I bet anything, it's somewhere near $500 USD big ones.

Yeah I know what you mean, it is the same crap Canon pulls with their "locked" features on cheaper cameras to encourage you to spend more. I know it is good business sense but there is an ethical line there somewhere, not sure if this crosses it or not.

ETA:

$500 ouchy, but only because I think I want one, I really like the change to the master/remote selection now being a switch and the overheat protection.

Yeah, the switch itself is worth the extra $120 for me. I hate going into the menus to turn on remote, I do it so frequently :x

It seems like most of my camera related purchases/upgrade have been for the sheer sake of convenience, now that I think about it :O
