I waited until almost the end of the cycle again to submit something to JPEG magazine (my second submission). There's only three days left (four counting today)

Please have a look and vote if you like it. Thanks in advance.

Not sure I uploaded the best version of that...looks awful dark on the site. :(

Here's a bigger version of the exact same photo (actually smaller than the one they got, but bigger than what you can see.)

Comments welcome here too. :)

ETA: Ooh, I see on the site, voting is open until the 12th of August! Good, that gives my shot a little more time.

Well so far I have only 5 "Yes" votes (being new to this, I'm not sure how many are needed, but I suspect a lot more than 5!). If you think it's just a bad image, too dark, etc., let me know, or what I can do to improve it! It seems I can still "change" my image from their interface.

Or perhaps it just needs more time (though voting closes in 7 days).

Here's the link for your convenience.

From those experienced, how many "yes votes" do you typically need to be in the publication?

I always thought about the last day entries. It's almost impossible for them to get 5 or 10 votes, so if one of them is jpg worthy, would they be published?

I think, this is only my personal feeling for the magazine, there is a second look for all the entries by the magazine people. Of course they probably take most voted ones up front, but they probably are looking all the images. So, your image is good, but it might be a little late to pickup enough votes, so it could be subject to get a second look after submissions are done.

jpg magazine loves kinds of entries you submit... so, you never know :)

For the required votes, I don't know :/

Hi Neil,

I was lucky enough to have one of mine published. S.O.A.P. It had 195 votes, many faves and comments. When I got a positive comment from one of the JPG staff I was VERY hopeful and lo and behold they sent me an email saying that I had been chosen out of over 10,000 entries to be in issue 12! It was my first published photo!! :) They seem to like edgy and artsy type of photos. Many of which would do poorly at a challenge here at DPC. :)

I recommend putting your entry in as soon as you can. The more days you have it on the site the more "Yeahs" and interest you generate. I think they also look at views, comments and faves. They have a category "This Photo is Hot" so you know that at least you are in the ball park! If you get into the "Hot" category your photo will show up on the first few front pages when people bring up the photos for voting. :)

I voted yeah for you photo. It's a nice one! Beautifully done!

Good luck!

I've just given the (enthusiastic) nod to three pictures.

My understanding is that mr. and mrs. JPeg magazine select the photos they want. In other words (again, this is my understanding) an editorial staff sorts through the submitted material and chooses what they consider best for publication. Votes may and probably do help, but they are not the absolute criterion for selection. I think the main thing with the site is to maximize the number of eyeballs viewing it. Sending links to your chums increases the eyeball count, so...

So much for the cynicism - it's all pretty good, clean fun as far as I can tell.

Peter, although all that might be true (and probably is), if it can help, well what the hell, right. Besides JPEG is a clear cut above the “normal” photo magazines, and I for one would be proud to be published there. I will ask are you able to obtain JPEG in Norway, if not I will gladly send you issue #16 for your enjoyment.

BTW, I want to thank everybody for the big YEA….

Absolutely. I voted for all the entries linked in this thread and I always do vote for those that come to my attention here. I dare say if one was really dreadful I might decide against it, but a) I don't expect that ever to happen and b) it would have to be really, really bad, because I'm basically big on loyalty...

God bless her and all who sail in her.

BTW, thanks for your generous offer, Alan. I'm not sure if I've ever seen JPEG in shops here, but they keep telling me to subscribe, so I do have that option...

I did go over and vote on the above photos. If anyone would care to reciprocate, that would be nice. 9) Link

Too cool! I was thinking about posting something like this as well, as I just entered my first-ever submission to JPG a couple days ago, too. :P

Same category -- On Stage, so I guess we'll have some friendly competition. I've voted for yours, Neil, as well as others in this thread. Good luck to all of us!!!

Here's mine

Hey, Neil -- your Whirlwind Passion shot is marked "HOT!" right now. I'm not sure how they decide that, nor how long it lasts, but you are on the HOT page for now! :D

I actually just entered my first photo in that same contest. You can see it here. I gave all you guys a positive vote.

Where did everyone hear about this site/magazine? Just seems a little coincidental we're all joining around the same time!

I found out about them via NYIP. There was supposed to be a free issue of JPG in my NYIP intro package, but there was not. I contacted NYIP, and they gave me the web address to use for a free issue for NYIP students. I had to "join" the site to ask for the free issue, and then I saw all the categories you could enter photos in, etc. I had a couple of shots on hand I threw into the On Stage and Single Color categories -- I'm going to look through the others and post some more when I have time.

I stopped by my local Bookman's yesterday and checked out an actual print "in hand" -- and I'm quite impressed! I didn't take the time to read it cover to cover, but I thought it was a very professionally-made magazine, and I'd be happy to have a shot or two in it one day.

Anyway, I'm just curious how Neil and others found it, too. Does anyone subscribe to the actual print magazine, too?
