Hi
I normally use "M" setting on my nikon, however I have moved over to "P" to see what it offers for a quick fix, dont shoot me down in flames for that remark...
The problem i have is that once it sets to "P" it defaults to 60 @5.6, however when I turn the rear dial right or left to gain the P* so I can change shutter speed with matching F stop nothing happens...now this might be me, more than likely doing it wrong..can you help please

Thanks
John

My first thought would be do you have a flash on the camera- but I think a D700 has a much higher sync speed.

The shutter speed and aperture should vary depending on the lighting.

It is my understanding that the P mode is an auto-mode that chooses the shutter speed and aperature automatically based on the metering of the camera. So both will change as you meter different scenes to shoot. Being able to manually change a setting while in P mode would mean having to have a "hyper-program" mode, but I'm not sure if the D700 has this or not, without going in to hunt for stats.

On my K10D, if I'm in P mode, I have to hold down a separate button (which is marked in green), in order to enter Hyper-Program mode, which then allows me to manually switch up the settings. Perhaps you have a similar button?

*EDIT* Oops, I must have misread the post. Sorry :)

My d50 does this too occasionally.... Usually switching mode and back fixes it.

Yes I believe this is because of your flash,I went through the same thing and was banging my head against the wall trying to figure out why it wasn't working. If you are trying to stop it down, the auto settings will not let you slow your shutter less than 60. And you cant speed up your shutter and get proper exposure because you are already at your maximum aperture. Of course this is all assuming you are using your flash.

I have flash SB800 on and in menu(camera) the flash shutter speed is set at 60 and cannot go any higher ?
If i take the flash off the shutter changes and has just gone up to 250, however it says that once you turn the rear dial, it goes to P* you can change shutter with matching f stops, this photography is always a step learning curve
thanks

i think someplace buried in the menu you are set for a sync speed of 60 / if you set it for 250 or fp you should beable to move the setting to whatrver

Hi
Thanks to everyone for their helpful comments< ralph you use the D3 what's your most used setting, I only got involved in the P setting, as I read ken Rockwell and he states he uses it all the time, thought i'd see if i was missing out on anything.
Thanks

I'm either really tired or been watching too much politics. At first I thought this thread was "P setting on Nixon".
