How often does a person 100% crop a scene anyway? Sure it's a problem that Canon should address but really how often would you notice it?

In the flood of black dots thread over at DPreview I did find a post where someone linked to a non english site which demonstrated that it's something not only afflicting the Canon 5D DSLR's but other makers as well.

Not to be rude, but I don't find it logical to defend an image quality flaw in a $3000 camera, except from a personal attachment standpoint. You pay the big bucks for the extreme level of perfection and excellence. If you could do with "well I probably won't notice the flaws", you wouldn't be in the market for this camera.

Interesting - I'll be looking for this.

Oh yer absolutely right, I'm not defending Canon here...they should fix that...should be relatively easy to map out this defect. My point was wow there are some big time pixel peepers out there to catch this defect.

Found that link. I didn't get a chance to wade through all those posts on the chinese forum. Was using altavista's babelfish "chinese simplified" -> "english" translation.

Really not perfect since the last time they launched a 'Pro' spec camera was the 1D3 and that had the autofocus issues (allegedly).

Are they rushing releases, or pushing boundaries ? who knows . .

They could do with finding a way to try and come out of this looking good though, especially with the amount of competition in this sector.

I would like to know if the images with 'dots' next to the bright spots were RAW dumps, or camera processed and converted JPEGs.

If they are RAW dumps, it is quite possible they come from sensors, most probably due to over saturation.
If they are from camera processing, however, and as the author in the above article mentioned they appear at strategic locations of (right to the horizontal areas and below the vertical ones), I would suspect a directional filter that deepens the ridges between dark and bright areas... an example would be a type of on camera sharpening or contrast enhancement filter. This should be easy to fix using firmware I would think. Or it could not be a problem at all depending upon how much of that filtering was enabled by the user.

The link you quoted says RAW dumps, visible in a couple of different processing tools.

Got mine on Thursday, and will be debuting with my Shadow V entry. The black dots worked to my advantage by adding depth to my shadows! ;)

I'm going through file size shock.

For the HD movie feature, is there a recommended external microphone for the 5D Mark II?

Just an FYI for the 5DMKII shooters. Some of the issues that Canon has with the banding and black dots. Here is an article on the problem from Canon. Article
