And one more cool thing I got there: A 6.5x9cm glass negative I was given for free by a guy that was selling some old slides and a projector after we had talked for a while at his stand. If anyone (bear?) knows anything about how these were made and developed it'd be sweet to know. The glass negative came together with another one in an old faded paper envelope with a letter inside that had some old german hand writing i can't read, so I'm guessing they were made around 1910-1920.
And yes, it's obviously a freaking mushroom groving out of a glass bottle, don't have a clue why in the world somebody would do that, but whoever the person was, he must have either been a weirdo or a biologist of some kind...lol

As to the history of the 6.5x9 glass plate, I don't have a clue; anything I discovered would be by google searching, so you may's well see what you can find yourself. I have never encountered a camera that shot such small glass plates.

As for the actual subject of the picture, it is STILL a great mystery exactly how mushrooms grow and spread. They are very poorly understood. It seems that entire areas of mushrooms are actually a single organism, and that in fact certain fungal species may be the largest organisms on the planet, by far; their entire "real" life is underground, and the caps or whatever that pop up are just the visible manifestations of the organisms, not the organism itself. Underground fungi are indispensable in the chain that converts dead organic matter into fertilizer and back into life-forms again.

And, to cut to the chase, what your picture is of, is of an early attempt to study the fungus by growing it so its "roots" are visible... Scientific image, for sure. And a cool one, too :-)

Robert, thanks for your insight on fungi science. ;-)

Today I got to do my first manunal developing with the help of a friend from university who has her own darkroom in a small broom chamber. lol
The Apx 100 came out beautiful, but the HP5 test roll from my "new" 6x9 cam turned out overprocessed (or overexposed?) and it lacks sharpness GOOD (but that's just the cam not the developing). Anyways, it was a lot of fun, looking forward to doing that on my own on a regular basis from now on!

Agfa Apx 100 from the 6x9
Ilford Hp5+ from the Mamiya 645
both developed in Tetenal Ultrafin 1+10

...and as Bear_music suggested i did a little research on glass plate photography and came across this VERY interesting site: //www.glasnegativ.de/

Check out their gallery with a beautiful collection of b&w photographs from between 1910 to 1940. If you know some german you should also read the very insightful commentary to each gallery and image!

Here is the link to my black and white gallery. They were taken with either my canon rebel 35mm or my bronica medium format. The film was mostly tri-x 400. I processed/printed all these in the darkroom and used my camera to "scan" them.
Black and White Gallery

I have a couple of rolls of 220 and 120 to develop when i get back to school. The photos are from my trip back to New Zealand so i cant wait to see them.

Very good work, dude!

Here's a shot from another test roll out of my 6x9 Bessa I.
It's actually the first shot that came out rather sharp. It seems like the folder has been bent quite a bit over the years so the focus is either on only one side of the frame or it's completely off, so that makes hitting a focus spot a lottery game...It's a lot of fun taking street and candid photos with this thing though, because nobody takes me serious...;-)

so my 40d broke a few days before my friend's wedding. it was a good chance to dust off the ol' ae-1 with the 50mm f/1.8. i managed to score some ISO800 film too, which helped a lot. here are my 2 favorite shots from the night. a lot of them came out like garbage, but i was a little (very) tipsy ;)

I was in Sioux Falls for work and brought my Bronica along 'just in case'. Happened upon a camera store with 24 hour 120 film developing. Serendipity, sort of. So I finished off the roll in the camera, which was color. I had planned to develop it in b&w chems at home, but decided to have them do it. So, this is my first color image from the used medium format camera I picked up about 6 months ago.
