Keep on keepin' on, folks - you're very inspirational!

If you are very lucky they will give you Chantrix. That is (from what I hear) the most painless quit there is. Unfortunately for me, its not covered by my insurance and is quite expensive. You will not have that problem in the military.

I don't think they prescribe it, though. I suspect it's too expensive for the military as well. He mentioned the two usual suspects - Zyban and nicotine patches.

Hi everyone
Well its been a bit of a rollercoaster ride over the last couple of days, day 5 was disgusting, day 6 I nearly ruined the whole thing by having a couple of puffs of a cigarette at the pub - and woke absolutely ashamed of myself and terrified that all the pain I'd been through over the past week was for nothing - but then day 7, yesterday, I woke thinking "no, it was just a slip, no more than inhaling smoke from the fireplace, and I am still determined to stop".

jettyimages Thats the spirit :) Saturday I was at This with my friends, we were having a blast with This, One of my friends was smoking one of This, he was honestly trying to avoid buffing my direction, but it happened, and I inhaled it all by accident, and started to look like This, thought about having one cigar .. but I remembered I have This, and that my goal is to look like This, which brought me back to reality, and happy to say I didn't slip yet, so I am still for the Blue, btw, you deserve a blue for continuing the challenge.

You are funny Prince Ameed :-)

BTW, I think you already look better than Arnie, so take that off your list!

Hey guys.. I havn't has a chance to post in a couple days... I'm doing really well with my atkin's diet.. It's been a week today and I've lost 10 pounds. In the begining of the week I was really struggeling. I felt really sluggish and was craving anything and everything that contained even the slightest traces of carbs.. but today I have a ton of energy... Cravings are pretty much in check and I get full really quickly when I do eat.. so this is forcing me to eat much less than I normally would. Unfortunatly however.. the cigarette cravings got to me. I only went smoke free for 2 days. I've cut down my smoking only to the times when the cravings become unbearable... about 5 a day.. I am still planning to quit.. its just too much of a lifestyle change all at once. I am psyching myself out for a quit date of July 1. I am moving into a new apartment. I think the change of scenery will inspire me and by that time I will be used to the low carb routine.

Congrats to everyone who has made it through the first week. And anyone who didn't.. pick right up and try again:o)

Hi Deb
I'm not sure if I'm the roaring success I should be, but I've been using patches, and they really do work. You just have to decide to quit, it really is a mental thing rather than physical, once you have the patches on. I've heard Zyban can have side effects - not really necessary if you can just find the determination and strength to get through a couple of days of discomfort. Then you get amazing highs (wish they were still there now!) that make it all worth it. I'm finding the hardest time is now, I'm on day 9, but its not physical, its mental, and only because of external factors.
Whatever you decide, we'll be behind you all the way :-)

Hi All, Been SOOOO busy this week I just have not had a chance to update.

Unfortunately I have not had time to get out on the bike or even manage many situps but I am still in the battle of the bulge LOL..

I will do a weigh tomorrow and post it up I expect it may be about the same as it was in the original weigh in (my weight hardly ever moves much), will do my utmost to put in a concerted effort in the next couple of days and get back on track.

I'm still at it. Although I hit a speed bump the last 2 days and bought a small cigar each day. I have not had one today. Haven't had cigs at all.. just the 2 mini cigars.

So guys... don't do it, don't buy the cigar just cause I did, it was stupid of me.. and could of ruined it all.

Changes I have noticed thus far:
Bigger Appetite
Sleeping Much Better!
Waking up easier in the mornings!
FATTER WALLET!

I'm getting the impression this is really the danger zone. I'm feeling very much that way too, it would take nothing to get me back to smoking today, so I'm fighting every instinct and its making me really unhappy and stressed that I have to go through this on day 9. I agree with you that you wake up easier, you sleep better, you get richer, and on my part my eyes and skin are looking better, I don't smell and I'm feeling much more able to undertake a fitness regime. But the cravings are loud and clear today :-(
Ameed, any advice? Does this stage go, or are we in for the long haul?
06/08/2009 06:55:14 PM · #184
I think it will be like this if we let it be like this. errr?

We have to train ourselves not to think about smoking. Personally, I think about it constantly..and it sucks..

But I have noticed that when I busy I'm fine.. when I watch a movie without commercials I'm fine, as long as there isn't a break in what I am doing.. I'm fine. It's the stopping points that screw me.. and everything has a stopping point.

Somehow I have to not think about smoking, I'll let you know when I figure that one out.=P

From what I recall (and it was a long time ago now) the cravings are more or less gone within the first 14 - 21 days (well it was for me but I didn't use patches or anything so don't know if that would make a difference). My biggest problem was finding something to do with my hands and also something to replace the smoking at those key moments (after dinner, having a beer, etc), I honestly cannot remember what it was I used to do with my hands although it was something simple like spinning a coin 10 times or similar (just a distraction technique), but I do remember chewing lots of gum.

It's weird as I remember the sensation of craving more vividly on the later cravings (around 6 months or so in) than I do the early ones, I think it's because they were more like those feelings you get when you recall / reminisce over an old job or relationship.. The thing is these were very few and far between and often came completely out of nowhere so that's probably why I remember them most.

Good luck everyone, I think most of you are over the hard bit it's the mental struggle now more than physical

It does get better. Hang in there.

Hang in there everybody!

Day 9 for me.

Hardest points for me: when watching a documentary, when drinking, when talking on the phone. I give it three minutes then I go outside and blow bubbles if I still need to. The urges have really started to become more annoying than a threat. Hopefully, they'll stay that way. I still haven't let my friend Paula over. I don't feel safe around her. She smokes a lot and really enjoys it.

Good points: My anxiety is gone. Seriously, it is. I can go to social events without getting panicky. I can ride on the interstate without digging my fingernails into the handle, Smed's smart-assyness doesn't seem so smart-assy anymore. My stomach doesn't feel like it's tied in knots anymore and my heart doesn't race or flutter for no reason anymore. OH, and I smell really good. Smed even bought me a new outfit for open mic night on Thursday where I will be playing bongos for an audience. Haven't done that in 3 years... but I'm not nervous like I used to be.

Am I ever going to smoke again? NOPE

Senate could vote today on tougher tobacco laws.

We picked a good time to quit

jettyimages Thanks for the compliment, Arni is off my list :)
Regarding the craving, it will start to level out from week 2 to 3, it will not disappear at all, but you wont notice it till you are around temptation, or when updating this thread, beside that, you will be just fine. I am not expert as today I only finished my first month, but I can honestly say there will be a fair chance of getting back to smoke, people who never tried it or never liked it they don't know how darn lucky they are, but the problem is with people like us, who smoked '' past tens '' and liked it. At the moment, I only have my craving around smokers, don't have the daily attacks at all, or very rarely. Intelli mentioned a very important thing '' We have to train ourselves not to think about smoking. Personally, I think about it constantly..and it sucks.. ''I totally agree with him. I am taking it one step at a time. My goal for the next month is to keep my guards up, I can't believe I am already going through month 2 :*D You can do it.

haze Sorry to hear about not being able to continue the challenge, you are our first soldier down, I wish you the best of luck with your diet.

Mark-A Its ok, it is a harsh challenge to lose weight stop smoking at the same time, we have 6 months to reach our goals, small steps each month would get us there :)

Intelli Hey Nick, its ok, you didn't quit yet, but you are in the danger zone, my previous attempt, and all my friends who tried to quit smoking and have just one or 2 cigars aday failed, unfortunately there is no gray area, either we do smoke or not .. smoking occasionally considered smoking .. be careful my friend, I really wish you a healthy future.

cynthiann Way to go, thats the spirit :)

BAMartin I hope this would work, here in Canada it didn't have much impact. They raised the taxation many times, so the cigarettes pack cost between 6 to 10$, all these ugly pictures covering the entire pack, people ended up buying cigarette holder, I was one of them. They banned smoking in closed and public places, so smokers started to have no choice but to set on the terasses, and non smokers are trapped inside the restaurants :) but indeed it is much better than keeping it the way it is.

Well I'm at 121 days of not smoking and we can update the chart I have lost 5lbs. We are getting ready to do a 2 week road trip, I picked good snacks to eat and will try to make good choices when we stop to eat.

Hi everyone - Thought I would check in. Seems like everyone is hanging in there. Keep up the good work! Today is day 22 for me and I have to say things are changing. Yesterday and today were the first days that I wasn't constantly haunted by the thought of smoking. It's actually pretty cool to know there are better days ahead.

There are .. hang in there, I am about 1 month and I am almost over it, it only gets better, then you start discovering people around you that you counted as non smokers smoke one or two every now and then, but you are the strongest ..
Just Say No :)

This is such an inspiring thread! Wish I could join you guys. Maybe I'll do it on my own next to you all. After a couple of fat jokes directed my way today plus some other commentary, I'm really thinking it is time to lose some weight. After smoking a cig and feeling like crap, probably a good time to lose that garbage too!

Hello all, I just thought I would let you all know that I'm holding steady and I'm still at 14 1/2lbs lost. I've leveled off but not given up :)

MAX!

Hang in there everyone, I'm pulling for you.

This silence creeps me out .. Any buddy here?!!
I am doing fine when it comes to quitting smoking, actually better than I thought, my appetite is getting much stronger, as I enjoy food much more, I can eat 2 pounds of fruit without any problem :) and this is not good ..
Weight wise, I went to the gym for one day .. and you can forget it :) getting on the elliptical machine for 30 min not as easy as it used to be, so I'll take it one step at a time, warming up this month and do my stretching :)
Thats all about me .. how is it going with you guys?
06/12/2009 11:04:10 AM · #197
Sorry for the silence on my part. My 14 year old daughter PaulinaRD just moved back home. She spent last year living in Idaho so she could be involved with rodeo, but has decided she would rather live with me. We have been very busy, no time to post much. Also no time to even think about smoking.

Two months, one week, three days, 21 hours, 14 minutes and 6 seconds.
1437 cigarettes not smoked saving $431.31.
Life saved: 4 days, 23 hours, 45 minutes.

Hey Ameed!
Here I´m doing good without cigarretes...
I also quit the nicotine patches... its been a couple of months without cigarretes and 1 week nicotine free!! I have the patches at home and at work (just in case...), but im not using them anymore.

The weight challenge is tanking... I think i´m getting fatter... I´m not so worried because I will go back to the gym soon, and on 15 days I´ll be on vacation (when I always get thinner).

I almost forgot that i am/was a smoker... sometimes i get some really strong cravings... but they go away on a few minutes...

Lets keep on going!!!

Cheers for you all!!

Twelve days!! Woot! I thought people gained weight because they traded cigarettes for food. I now know that it's because food tastes soooooo good!!! Haven't gained any myself, I've actually lost some, just don't know how much yet. Doing lots of grilling and steaming. No frying. I have lots of energy too!

Can't thank you enough Ameed. I now know why you started this. I feel so great, I want everyone else to quit too, and feel like I do.

Food is better, sex is better, smells are better... what more can you ask for. I hope more people decide to join in and I hope everyone else is hanging in there... anybody heard from Trish?
06/13/2009 02:09:28 AM · #200
Sorry guys. I fell off the wagon, life's been dealing me one too many difficult moments and I stuffed up in the middle of one of them. I thought I had a handle on it, but it happened again last night, so I'm going to have to start again tomorrow. I feel like a complete failure, really depressed, but the reason I had a couple was because I thought I was losing my mind anyway and was completely out of control - almost dangerous to myself. Not much difference either way is it, I will just have to go through all the torture yet again this week. Don't give up on me completely, I really want to get there and I made it to 9 days, but not good enough. Not shooting for the brown on this one though.
