Dknourek will demonstrate;

Starting out, this wave didn't look any different from any of the others splashing off the rock.

But then it splashed higher... and higher...

At this point I was smart enough to turn my back and cover my camera, so it only got hit a little. Someone else wasn't quite so bright.

Becky-Lee and her camera weren't as quick either, though at least SHE tried to move.

Then there's the guy who just stood there, shooting madly while the wave and lens got intimately acquainted.

I'm sure there are better ways to clean one's lens than with salt water.

AND better ways to wash one's clothes as well.

But at least he seemed to enjoy it!

edited cuz a c went wandering (no, I will NOT admit that I can't spell!)

Well, he kept shooting for the rest of the evening and all day yesterday, so it must be pretty good!

Wait until he posts his series of shots of the wave. I must admit they're pretty cool :)

The shots are nothing to write home about but Ill try to get some posted when I get home tonight or tomorrow. the shutter speed was a little slow so theres a lot of motion blur ;) I figured I was going to get wet half way through and figured meh might as well just keep shooting but didnt think Id get hit with that much water lol.

Definitely in the same club.
I have felt much shame, embarrassment and stupidity from getting too close for the shot. Only to realize that 2 ladies were watching me the whole time ... which made me feel even better. Add to that the fact that I nearly lost my camera and possibly my life, and I should have gotten a special icon for this one ;)
Notice that this photo was taken with the 10-20 mm ... I was very close.

you will have to wait another couple hours for me to get off work, get home, fire up the network, find the dam photos, edit the pics, and finally post them for everyone's entertainment ;)

I don't know about the ambulances in your area, but if you come here I can give you your choice of three ambulances to set up a shot in (along with a bunch of fire trucks). I've never actually posed any shots in an ambulance though. I've taken a lot during training, but nothing where I actually posed a shot. Hmmmm, maybe I should.

Yea but she also wanted action like bones sticking through flesh and blood spraying all over... :P

Although there were a couple instances where if I had taken a wrong step that might have been a reality but would also gotten kicked up a notch with air ambulances thanks to the remote locations lol

Hey hey, just one bone would have been enough if it was a big one, and we didn't want blood spraying EVERYwhere, just a little fountain. Was that too much to ask?

Nathan, too bad you live so far away. I probably could have arranged something when hubby was a firefighter but I wasn't into photography then.
(Rescuing guys like Dave were one of the reasons he gave it up. lol)

I can do you even one better...how about an amputated hand??? One of our explorers blew his hand off when he was a kid and we could dress the stump up to look gory!!!! We have a guy working at the grocery store that doesn't have any legs below the knees. We could do a mass casualty incident!!!!

*grin* I'm a sick puppy. *grin*

As for being too far away....next time we go to Alaska (not sure when/if that will happen again) we'll make sure we take a detour your way. Won't guarantee we'll bring an ambulance or firetruck though. *sigh*

um, from experience, not very. A glass of water (freshwater thankfully) spilled on my camera 2 days after I got it. The only means I had to get the water out was to suck it out myself. Very effective, but it tastes terrible XP
It recovered an hour later though :)

I had the opposite experience. I was up in Boundary Waters canoeing 2 years ago. I had my 10D with me and at one point we had a choice of a portage or wading through some shallow water towing the canoes behind us. Since it was easier to drag the canoes than to carry them up over the hilly area, we dragged them. I had my camera around my neck as we walked through knee high water, until I stepped into a deeper pool, caught my foot on an underwater branch and pitched forward into the water, plunging my camera into the crisp cold water of the lake. I was horrified. The lens was worse off than the camera though - it was foggy for a week, then it dried out, but the camera was fine - when I switched to use a different lens, everthing was great. woo hoo! Go Canon!
