if you still need another opinion, pm me.

Peter, I responded, sorry it took so long I was enjoying your choices, I hope I didn't add to the confusion.....:)
09/06/2009 11:43:14 AM · #178
Thanks, Alan. I'd say you supported the confusion more than added to it. My reaction to your (well thought out) comments was something along the lines of 'you and me both'.

Hey, I thought it was a couch too.

It really does help though - you've confirmed/justified pretty much what I was thinking. Without your feedback I can never be sure if I'm getting interference messages from cloud cuckoo land.

ETA
PM on its way to you, Wendy.

So, here I sit feeling a bit , well not depressed but something in that neighborhood. Earlier Peter asked for advice on a photo, lets talk about a bathtub telling the ocean about water. A couple weeks ago I asked Jeb for use of a work he presented in the snapshot side challenge that shows on my desktop and will stay there as long as I have the file, then look at the 2 framed photographs I took that hang over my desk, well my wife likes them. When I manage to pull my camera out of the drawer of my desk, and press the shutter button a few times, and look at my captures, I carefully press “select all “ of droll image after droll image then delete.
My pictures over the last few months lack heart, song, story, emotion of any kind. I’m not posting this looking for platitudes, maybe just maybe speaking the devils name might help, heck, I don’t know. I have got to try something and soon, next weekend I will be attending a event that will have so many opportunities for what I’m looking for on a minute by minute basses it blows my mind.
So off I go to visit some favorite photographers and go looking, not for a direction, but a starting place.
Thank you for listening.
Alan

PS, I'm glad I was some help Peter..:)

Dunno mate. You can't reach into your head/heart etc and press a button that switches to 'enjoy taking pictures'.
Maybe think about next weekend's event and find something to practice on, similar in terms of lighting, subject matter, demands on timing or whatever. That way at least you hit the ground running.

LOL that might be problematic, I live in Utah, the motto of the surrounding states is “Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow might find you in Utah”. Next weekend I will be going to Grand Junction, Colorado, for a 2 day outdoor rock concert, featuring several currently and past, popular bands. The event is called Rock Jam

Alan, I kinda know what you're going through. Although some days I kinda enjoy the go out and shoot, then go home and delete. It's cathartic in a way. The Rock Jam thing sounds like a great opportunity just to have fun with the camera. Shoot people, show them themselves, laugh. And I can also understand being stuck somewhere not very photographic. Figure out outings of some sort. Somewhere a bit different to go, just to shoot. I tend to plan weekends around where I want to go to shoot. Doesn't mean I end up with anything, but it does get me out of the house. :-)

...adding to Deb's comment - I've been in a slump and just last night I went to a little concert in my park. I had my XTi and the 70-300. The lense got some attention from this one guy, so I handed him the camera and said "here, take a look" We were quickly engaged in shop talk and he kept finding me throughout the evening. Again, I handed him the camera and he enjoyed shooting and talking. It felt good for me too just to be engaged in the "language of photography". It was very motivating. ...and like Deb said Shoot people, show them themselves, laugh...it makes for a nice conversation and validates your passion in a way.

I do shoot everyday, but mostly candids from school - documenting what goes on, special events, yearbook stuff, but I miss not being in challenges - it's been months for me and I notice you missed some challenges too.

Another thought might be to look into meetup.com for your area. They have hiking groups, photo groups - most anything you can think of. I recently attended a couple in my area (trash the dress) and a lighting workshop - those 2 events hooked me up with 2 people that I am getting together with soon - one in Canada so I need the enhanced driver's license to cross the border, and the friend that met with me 2 weeks ago and we had a fun day trip in Buffalo.

Well, just my 2 cents

OK, you live in Utah, far be it from me to belittle your problems :)

Outdoor rock concert means fading daylight and increasing contrast with lights from the stage, I guess. You can probably find a halfway decent manual setting for the stage lighting (sez he, ignorantly) but if you want candids from the crowd you have a bigger problem. There must be a construction site with arc lights around somewhere (don't you work on one?) - and you could snap candids in the park (do they have parks in Utah?) just to get warmed up for lighting conditions.

Bla bla bla, I'm sure you're on top of all this anyway. There's a fair argument for taking a point and shoot or no camera at all to a rock concert, so it doesn't get in the way of the experience :)

I just leafed (?) through my past entries and discovered that I have a Posthumous Blue for this thing:

so life's full of surprises...

Hey raish. Sorry, I had to leave. But if it's not too late, I responded to your pm.

You can't make yourself feel something. And you can't make yourself be happy with something you're not. Sometimes you might just need a break. Usually, by the end of summer, I'm so sick of my camera that I don't touch it again for months. Usually it's because I've been doing all the things I have to do: swim meets, youth baseball, vacation bible school, etc, that I'm so sick of looking at pictures--nothing interests me. Anyway, when I force myself to take pictures and my heart's not in it, I'm not going to find those pictures interesting. I wasn't interested at the time, why would I be interested later?

The point is, I don't think you can force it. Maybe you just need a break. I take a break every year, but I never have a problem getting back into it. It's just nice to finally want to pick up a camera again, instead of feeling like I have to.

anyway--just my two cents worth.

*Ahem*...I'm Canadian! I'd say they're celebrating Labour Day.

Yep, Labour Day is definitely Canadian too. Sounds like you have an exuberant bunch. Just go ask them nicely to stop shooting fireworks into your yard. Might work! However if they are Canadians with dual citizenship and are thus also American...hmm...

*scratching head* Well you sure got yourself a problem there...noisy summertime neighbours and lots of little noisy kids...I guess seeing that Florida has its Snowbird problem (usually Quebeckers) who move to Florida each Canadian winter to ride out the weather in luxury, you have the summertime version...suppose we should call them Mosquitoes!

Yeah it does suck that they come down and annoy you each summer. Well, just crank the windows shut and wrap a pillow around your head...or run around outside in the backyard screaming random gibberish (like maybe something from a Canon manual ;-) and see if that gets their attention or shuts them up. Or go outside and take their pictures for september FS.

ETA: the fireworks thing is weird. Only place I can think of where fireworks were shot off a lot was in Vancouver, where a large Asian populace seemed to shoot off fireworks for any ol' reason. Are fireworks supposed to be restricted or something in Montana?

well we live like 20 mins from the res so you can get ANY type of firework imaginable. mayeb thats what they do. oh, and they have a stupid barking dog that they leave home everyday when they go to the lake.

and canon noise might work, but all the little kids have tiny dirtbikes and tiny fourwheelers so all the noise i might make will get overrun. grr

Where you moving to Terry?

You didn't get kicked out of Genesee did you?

Just saw this post. You're going to be jealous Bob. I shouldn't even tell you this but, I'm moving up to Topinabee. Mullet Lake is right across the street and also the Rail Trail that goes from Gaylord to Mackinac is right across the street.

I'm envious of anyone that gets to live in a place where Mullet Lake is right across the street. :-)

It does sound better than between the prison and insane asylum.

Not a very good picture (I was hanging out the car window looking behind me) but this is the view when coming into town.

That really does suck. How about calling bylaw officers? Surely there are noise and nuisance bylaws in Montana? How about your other neighbours, are they sick of these people too? If so could maybe get a petition going though it's probably a bit late for that now. Is the house a rental property? Does someone rent/lease it out to them or do they own it?

Mullet Lake... hehe... I may have to come up and see what hairdos the men are wearing! Photo-ops galore :D

Have fun with your move! I bet summer is gorgeous but I can only imagine that winter must be very very cold and snowy.
