Ok, I'm sorry, I'm sleep deprived and not understanding the survey. What's the deal? What's the purpose of a watermark we don't see and why are we surveying on it?

Again I am sitting on my hands until the create a post for it. Same thing happened with the Top 10 list; they announced it before it was available to see.

This survey isn't for the watermark, it's for the transparent overlay they have placed over images. If you right click an image and try to copy and save it, all you get is a transparent gif rather than the photo.

It's not a watermark. It's a transparent overlay (common on image sites) that prevents people from swiping photos by right-click or dragging. If someone tries it, they'll only get the blank image on top rather than the actual photo. There still are other ways to steal the images, of course, but we've already seen "complaints" from people who could no longer swipe images off DPC. Watermarking is a separate issue.

Gotcha.

I did notice it implemented earlier when I tried to download a photo of myself by another member, but couldn't do it..lol

not on top of thumbs ?

I copied one of my own photos with a right click, and was able to paste it to Photoshop. I tested on other member's photos, and the overlay seems to work. When I pasted into Photoshop, I only got one black pixel. I like it.

To be honest, I hate it! It's no prevention against getting the image (ok, just a little bit for lazy people) and I can't use my images here as an easy way to set my desktop background.

I can save my own pics, just not someone elses.

I don't think "swipe" is the right word, and I don't see why "complaints" is in quotes. The complaints are real (no quotes), and I doubt complainers were the ones "swiping" images. I like using these images as desktop wallpapers, and I believe I have a right to do that (not "swiping" if I'm just making my screen pretty); also, you can take the following as a true complaint, so you don't have to put it in quotes from now on...

I hate having to use [insert program name here]... it's not the time, it's the going to great lengths to "bypass the measure" and it makes me feel like I'm doing something illegal.
For someone who steals images, using [program] wouldn't be a problem: it's always the n'th image on the list of downloadable objects, and if you're someone who is stealing the images, the profit is probably more than worth having to "go to those great lengths" (5 clicks).

Thus, you've made it a lot more annoying for people like me, and just a tad harder for people trying to profit.

The overlay is fine with me. I HATE watermarks!
11/19/2009 06:54:14 PM · #13
ah, that was the problem. I selected one of mine, and it worked fine, so I couldn't figure out what they deal was. But I can't select someone elses. Now I understand.

It's fine by me, but not sure how this will work for folks who post images so others can do example edits and discuss them in threads. Will there be an opt out of it when uploading an image that one does want to allow others to download and edit, etc?

By putting the downloading versions into your workshop!

Not a fan..I would never take another person's work for profit but as others have said it's nice to use as wallpaper. Ifone really wants to "steal" photos it's easy enough to get around with the right programs.

Oh, cool. Thanks. Then I don't see any downside to this :-)

As I said, it makes it a lot more annoying for us casual downloaders who aren't trying to make a profit, but the difference to someone who's trying to steal is inexistent.

H'm. Have to try this at work tomorrow again. It didn't work for me the last days, but perhaps something has changed.
11/19/2009 07:05:03 PM · #21
Well, it won't really stop someone who is determined to get an image. It's easy to get around, but it's another deterrent that sends a message that these are not free for the taking.

Perhaps you missed this phrase at the bottom of every page? "All digital photo copyrights belong to the photographers and may not be used without permission." You or the photographer may not care, but if you are using someone else's photo without permission (including desktop wallpaper), then you swiped it.

I prefer watermark, I could easily download Judis pic with corel screen capture.
It may make it difficult for the average user, but if there was a mark it would be a lot more difficult. Eitherway, if they really want it they'll have it. A small watermark maybe.

I'm for it. Most of the images that are liberated from this site are by the stupid and the lazy. There isn't anything to stop someone who is determined to grab an image. And if you really want a copy of a members image? Ask them.
11/19/2009 07:25:47 PM · #25
This is how I'm looking at it -- Yes, there are ways around it. However, we have 3 tickets from non-dpc users asking why they can no longer download all the pictures for their (and in one case, their coworkers) enjoyment.

So, it *does* deter the casual swiper.

For those more nefarious users, they can still steal them, but it will take them a few extra steps. That, in and of itself, may deter some, but they can no longer, IMO, claim "ignorance."
