That's where I'd end up as well. We can figure it out when it get closer to June.

Update: I'm trying to find two Hotels, local to Midtown/Times Square. One will be very, very inexpensive...as basic as it gets (just to rest your head and bags) and another, also inexpensive but with a few more amenities.

As I see it, you will hopefully be spending NO time your rooms, for only to sleep and shower. There's too much to do and too much to see...

Let me know if that makes sense to anybody and also when you post a response give me some idea how long you plan to stay (how many nights).

The date is the weekend of June 5th (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)? After Memorial Day weekend. Saturday will be the main day of the GTG but I will plan a few walk-arounds, for those who will be here longer.

Hostelworld.com

Might help you find some decent cheap options here - looks like a lot of folks here don't mind shared room, getting a big dorm with 6-8 beds something like this might work out great (and might also be a lot of fun)...

I'm not that delicate a flower but I could never stay in a Hostel. Did it twice....and that was twice too times many for me. I will post one that's local OR if someone could help locate one for us, that would be great. Right now I'm putting energy into finding a Hotel that's clean, inexpensive and has privacy, as that's sometimes a bit if a Challenge. I do recall Terje (some of you might remember him) stayed at a Hostel just a few blocks West of where I hope to find a Hotel and that could work. I will write him to find out any details BUT again, if anybody knows of a place or willing to help find one, please advise.

Here's a highly rated Hostel near ALL the action in a very funky square of town. Some of the strangest people hang out around there....so, I don't know.

Swiss 1291 Hostel is also reviewd well...local to where I hope to situate everybody and less funky. <<<< This could be the place!

I did state that I am trying to keep people in Midtown which is central and if folks are only in for a few hours there will be an easy focal point without people being stretched far and wide. I'm sure there are hundreds of places that are inexpensive throughout the city and people are welcome to stay wherever they wish BUT it will be nice if we are all within walking distance to meet, organize, drink, eat and get back to our respective places safely without extra complication (subway issues, parking issues etc.).

Believe me if there are 30-50 people to look out for, this could easily begin to suck (for me especially...big time) if few get stuck on the subway due to poorly running trains, bad timing or generally lost.

I'm old and like my creature comforts so something a step or three above a hostel would be good for me and those like me. I'm all for sharing a room but want that room to come with a bathroom of its own and a locking door. :-) Keep in mind, we all carry around rather expensive bits of equipment!

And Steve, I agree that a good central location to put us in easy reach of where we want to be is what we need. Don't want to go to New York and spend half my day on a train trying to get to point B!

Hopefully I'll be back living in NYC by June! Either way, I will make every effort to come, don't want to miss this.

414 Hotel

I just looked at their rooms and they were very, very nice. Not big but super clean, simple, contemporary, free wifi, TV, good sized bathrooms, a private court yard, continental breakfast incl. etc.

It's in a Brownstone on a hip, quiet side street (46th St. also called Restaurant Row)less than 100 yards from my place. They only have 25 rooms so, it will be nice and intimate without the huge pushy crowds. If you're interested there will be group rates if we book over 4 rooms. You'll practically own the place!

Let me know and we'll put the group under Steve Hill DPC to get bargain rates. Keep in mind prices will increase towards June which is the busy season so, if you start booking now as a group you will lock in a good rate.

Looks just fine. We are looking to come up Thursday, June 3 and leaving on the 7th or 8th I believe. At least that's the idea for the time being.

i'm interested. maybe go on and see what kind of rates they could get us? maybe even ask about what rates they'd give for 4 rooms, 8, 10, or more?

If I get some idea of how many people are interested in 414 Hotel and the dates they will be staying then I can approach them for group rates...

They were running a special yesterday for $129 BUT rates are going to be higher in June and over the weekend. I believe if people act quickly it should be around $160-180 which is inexpensive for the location and NYC in general. There are cheaper spots but a few that I know of have had strange/creepy reviews.

I am interested in attending. June could be rough timing-wise but I will try and free up the weekend so I can attend. (It is just too close to me to not attend!)

Absolutely interested in coming to NYC GTG. Please add me to the giant list. I'd be happy to share a room with whoever wants to go in on one.

If I can go, I'd totally be interested staying at the 414 - looks amazing in the middle of the city. Just checked rates for that weekend and they are steepish - $229 per night for a room with one queen.

Sometimes you can get a good rate at the Edison Hotel on W. 47th Street. I know some people who often stay there for like $160 a night, but then they are long-time regular customers.
