Bear in mind the NYC hotel room tax
01/18/2010 10:43:44 AM · #152
UPDATE *** UPDATE *** UPDATE

Let's go with The Edison Hotel. It's a New York Classic right off Times Square. Art Deco, simple, clean and quite inexpensive. I've had a few friends stay here that liked it...no complaints. There are better places but they can get very very costly and this property has fantastic rates for June which is peak season.

They have a few suites for $220 plus tax with two double beds which will be great for those sharing and would like nicer amenities compared to a Hostel. Try and score those quickly if you can get it together. Group rates start at 15 people but everyone has to check in and leave at the same time. I'm not sure that will be the case so, this place will work without the need for a group rate. 414 Hotel is nicer, quieter with more charm but I think they only have a few rooms with two double beds...otherwise Queens for a few dollars more but nice if you're staying for a week.

Again, let me know asap if this works for you guys.

Well looks like I'm a definite!! Whether this goes ahead or not, I arrive in NY on the 3rd June! I just booked my flights, I spend a few days in LA then onto NY until 13th June. Anyone else planning on hanging around for a while and interested in sharing accommodation to keep the costs down? ...and thanks for organising this Steve, two thumbs up!! : )

Gosh I need to get my skates on and book my flights or I won't be able to use those airmiles. Tentatively thinking 3rd - 9th June will be when I'm in town.

hehehe, thanks man!! : )
Although I'm really excited about heading to New York, I think the highlight, and what I'm really looking forward to, is meeting up with fellow DPCer's.
If you'd told me five years ago that I'd be traveling half way around the world to meet up with a bunch of photographers I'd met on the internet I would have said you were nuts!! : )

I can most certainly relate to that as I have flown from Ottawa, Canada to Seattle, Washington to attend a GTG, and recently met fellow DPCers in Munich and did a tour of Germany, with side trips to Austria, Italy and France.

Oh, and just prior to the NYC GTG, I am hoping to visit with Beetle and her husband plamprecin Brisbane, Australia.

Yes indeed... we are certifiable. :O)

This is great, guys. Can't wait to meet you all.

It looks like my husband's company will be sending him to upstate NY in the next couple of months, so that will put me in close proximity to this GTG.

PLEASE PUT ME ON THE LIST!

Also would like to hear from anyone who is interested in sharing room expenses!

Thanks, Linda

I was in a bicycle accident last week. FYI - bicycle against black ice - the black ice wins. I am waiting for MRI results to find out if I will have to have surgery on my leg or not (pray not), but I might STILL be on crutches in June. Gaaahhhh!!! When I decide to hurt myself, I don't fool around.

Sorry to hear about your accident -- that really sucks. I hope the MRI brings positive news.

FYI, I spoke with a businessman who said he just got a room at The Edison Hotel (W.47th St., less than a block from Broadway) for $109. That is VERY cheap for NYC.

He also suggested that nice, clean rooms can be had for a bit more than that at the Best Western on W.48th St (also less than a block from Broadway). That's the recently remodelled hotel that connects to the restaurant where I took my recent food photos.

I don't know if these rates apply to everyone and if they are good through June, but it's worth checking out.

Well, it looks like I'm for sure.....awaiting confirmation from Expedia on a room.

Confirmed.....Millenium Broadway Hotel. Now all I gotta do is find out how I can get a train to cooperate and get me there EARLY Saturday morning.

I"m still a maybe. How long I would stay will depend on hotel cost and plane ticket price! I'm still open if anyone wants to share hotel accommodations.

Just FYI for those planning to attend, the Belvedere Hotel is pretty nice and has room rates pretty low right now. Not sure if they will go up anytime soon. It's located about three blocks from Times Square and the subways run within a block away so it's easy to get around.
