Hi All

Wanted to find out what people usually carry the most in their bags when going to a party or a wedding

Currently i have
D300S
SB-900
16-85
70-200
Grip
Soon to come 50mm 1.4

So what does everyone carry. Will have to see how the 16-85 goes at a wedding to see if i need something like Canons 24-105. Cant find the Nikon equivalent.

Only did one wedding but most used lens was the Tamron 28-75 but also had the Tamron 70-200 on a second camera. At the dinner afterwards change to 16-50 and kept the 28-75 on the first camera for group shots. Since it was a Chinese wedding also used the Pentax 10-17 to get close up of all the participants in the tea ceremony afterwards.

Used 2 of the same flash that were gelled to the compensate for the light.

I wished that Pentax offered an equivalent to the 24-105 f4 also.

Hi, well you have a DX crop sensor so a 24-105 (24-70 nikon) is basically no good... not wide enough..

optimally you need a fast lens (f/2.8 sooooo should be faster than your 16-85, but you can still use that one)

The last wedding i did was in the summer... I used this setup:

Nikon D40 w/ Nikon 35mm f/1.8 AF-S (on one shoulder)

Nikon D90 w/ Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 (on the other...)

I used an SB-900 on the D90, but watch out... the SB-900 has a temperature meter... when it gets too hot it powers off for several minutes... mine overheated reight before they walked down the isle!!!! (I had it on Auto FP outside the church, so it's my own fault....)

LUCKILY I had a Nikon SB-600 for backup in my waist belt...

I also had a Tokina 12-24mm that I used for some shots... but not many...

I used a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 with an umbrella on the SB-600 for the closeups of the rings/shoes/flowers/... at the brides house as well...

some people use a long lens as well (70-200mm f/2.8) but I didn't use one and it worked out great... but if you have one, they can be handy, especially if part of the wedding is outside... you can get some great candid shallow DOF shots for a distance...

Oh, also used a Fisheye (Nikon 10.5mm) on the dance floor... it gets some AMAZING shots!!!

Oh, make sure to get yourself a Garry Fong Lightsphere for that SB-900!!!

I recently shot a kids Birthday Party and used my Nikon 17-55 2.8 on my D-300. The little B-Day Girls mom was more than happy with all the photos. Can't go wrong with that lens. It is no less than amazing.

Thanks for the advice

Unfortuantely at this moment i will have to do with the 17-85, 70-200 and 50mm

I was going to get a demb-flip IT instead of the gary fong. I have used it previsouly and had better experience with that

Also feel as though the 17-55 may be a bit too restrictive

I agree! it's a great lens, BUT if you are planning on switching to FX (D3 / D700) in the next little while, then don't break the bank on that lens as it is a DX lens and will NOT work as intended on a Full Frame camera... i'd recomend a lens like the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens... it's 1/3 the price and is actually sharper than the nikon Version (according to MTF curves) it's just not built and durable as the Nikon one... but it's a good alternative at 1/3 teh price if you are going to be dumping it shortly anyways when you upgrade to a FX camera (D3 , D700)..

just my two cents... =)

When I did a wedding I had my Sigma EX 70-200 F2.8 on but the photog I was assisting was using my 24-105 F4L

90% of work i do with 17-55 f2.8, it's a life saver. If you ever switch to FX body, you can keep this one as your second camera or sell it. This lens holds the value quite well.

Most likely wont change to D700

So wil the 16-85 be enough with the 70-200?

The 16-85 will work great, you'll just have to pump the ISO a bit to make up for the speed of the lens... and as I said, I didn't even bother with a 70-200 for my last wedding... if there are two photographers, one of them should have that long lens on a body, but if it's just you, trust me... you won't have time for that lens... especially if you are new to weddings... one thing I would consider is a second body... i'm not made of money, so for my second body I used a Nikon D40 (available directly from Nikon Canada for $250... can't go wrong...)

this one was taken with my backup camera (D40 w/ 35mm f/1.8) the fast lens gives you the nice shallow DOF

and teh scond body makes it MUCH easier... you don't have time to change lenses when the limmo driver is honking at you because he is blocking the road while you stop staffic to jump out and take pictures on a train track =) it's nice to have each of your main lenses on separate bodies...

I second the 10.5mm fisheye. I love using it at weddings.

giving away trademark secrets here =)

just hold the camera with the fisheye up as high as you can and aim it down and walk around the dance floor (sometimes tell people to look up and sometimes don't... last wedding I took about 100 shots like that, 50% of them were useable, i had trouble narrowing it down to 6 for teh photo book... can't go wrong!!!

I just cranked teh ISO to 1000, used the Garry fong tilted back to the ceiling, and tightened the apperture to 6.3 in Apperture priority... and fired away... works great!!!

i'll post some shots soon...
