Lame : lacking needful or desirable substance : weak, ineffectual

If I had a dollar for all the "Lame", "Sucks!", etc. comments I've received in challenges, I'd have lunch somewhere like Subway. Great points by Wendy and Maggye in the two previous posts. Shrug it off, Sporkmo - hard to believe you've been around this long and that bothered you.

I'm slightly annoyed by the comment, but far more annoyed by the response I got from wanting to discuss it now, rather than waiting for the end of the challenge.

Especially since it was an offhand remark, similar to the comment, and it wasn't really intended as the discussion it grew into, prolly.....

I never said I couldn't take a bad comment on an image. I learned a long time ago not to enter an image unless I was perfectly happy with it. I don't care at all if you don't like it.....*I* do, and that's really all that matters. I'm interested in your thoughts, and I don't necessarily expect someone in the same photography community to make a knee-jerk derogatory remark. If they do, then *they* should be able to take one in return, and if they're going to do that kind of thing, then they shouldn't be so chiken-sh*t as to hide behind a bag.

The door swings both ways, or it ain't a give and take situation. If you leave me a comment telling me that the image is uninspired, I may ask you to elaborate; if you leave me one that say "Lame", I'd prolly do the exact thing Spork did and mention that someone left a snarky comment and let it go at that. It certainly wouldn't ruin my day, but when you leave a comment like that, you'd best expect to be called on it. This community spends a lot of time squawking about comments, and IMNSHO, is pretty demanding about it. I mark them all as helpful, and honestly, I've gotten a few that I don't feel were.....but I haven't actually gotten one like that, or I wouldn't have marked it as such. I've been here for almost four years, entered over 200 challenges, tossed some real bricks, and gotten over 3200 comments, none of them approaching "Lame". So really......I'd have to say you're welcome to your opinion on it, but in my experience, you're off base......I've certainly exposed myself to way more potential for heat in challenges than you.

Just my $0.02 US.......obviously, YMMV.

started at 4.7 at about 10 votes, it got as high as 5.4... and has been dropping every sense..

I'm suspecting a huge amount of 5's..

I expect an inverse bell curve for the scores based on the comments. Either they love it and are 7-10 or they are really turned off by it and are voting it low.

In hindsight I screwed up. I had 2 ways to go with this image and I picked the more controversial one. Based on the comments if I had picked the conservative one I would have been doing much better. Oh well. I still like my image.

Looks like this will be my 2nd lowest score ever. At least now I know another kind of challenge NOT to enter. :-(

I gotta tell ya Jeb, this has been one of the best debates I've had on here in awhile, because you raise very interesting points... In that I mean, I definitely agree with you that if someone makes a derogatory remark, then they should be prepared to take a reaction to it... I totally agree with you when you say that a P.M. may be in order for clarification, especially if the comment is curt...

In all fairness, After reviewing my shots, I've really only had one comment where I was like "WTF???" but I have only been around for 23 challenges, and to be honest with you, I never felt the need for clarification because I felt that if someone left that kinda comment either A.) it was their first impression, and they simply typed it out (like I mentioned before, I'm sure even the best artists have had someone look at their image and think "Garbage!!!" ) or B.) They are someone whose opinion is insignificant... I have found that usually, its one of the two, and I'm okay with either... Having said that, I really hate the fact that people can leave comments anonymously, even if its just for the duration of the challenge... I say that because I have left people very critical comments at times, but I was never rude when doing so, and many times, I received a P.M. thanking me for an honest critique of their photo... For example, I have left 744 comments, and have yet to have a P.M. either asking for clarification or chastising me for criticism.

In closing, I've kinda changed my opinion in a way... because I think if someone can hide behind anonymity for a week, then they deserve to have the debate on their comment drug out into the public realm... Personally, I'll concede that with comments, I just don't care enough to argue over a comment someone left, but after some thought, I understand why others do. There are many photographers on here who shoot for a living, and many who put allot more time into their challenge entries than I do... So I guess I'm going to leave this conversation with me sitting on the fence (yeah, you guessed it, I'm Republican...LOL...) and I'm also going to leave this thread to posting scores as GeneralE requested earlier... So it was good debating with you, and you certainly swayed my opinion, at least alittle :) We should do this again sometime...

This trajectory targets being my third lowest score, but the image will be in good company with others that have unique character even if not widely appreciated. Topic seems to have generated a lot of interest -- evidenced by number of votes and number of views. Fun to have so many comments, especially the two that directly contradict each other.

By "doing better" do you mean simply getting a slightly higher score or making a more significant impact on the viewers? Would you really be happier with a 5.7 and 6 comments?

The score maybe bad but thread is interesting ... ...

Anyone starting a tutorial - 'How to leave sensible comments' Or '101 ways to tastefully describe an awful image' or maybe 'How to grow out of a lame comment"

I think it would be .5-.8 higher, because a lot of comments mention that they are deducting a point because of this one issue.

I'm not sure if it's better to score higher or have controversy. Interesting. I'll have to think about it.

Maybe not quite what you meant, but anyway there are at least two commenting tutorials in the tutorials section.

Read the comments and see why I consider this last-place image one of my most "successful," even going on to inspire further discussion in this thread.

I was on this site a year ago and remember participating in threads like this discussing the tasteless and completely useless comments some members and “guests” choose to leave. And I’m very disappointed (but not at all surprised unfortunately) that things have not changed much.

Why do people feel the need to write comments like “sucks” and “lame”? (And from what I’ve heard those are some of the politer comments.)

As my pappy used to say:
“if you can’t say anything nice, shut the F&%K up!!”

Well he used better language, but the message was the same.

People who leave non constructive comments are lame suckers.

Just sayin.

I think I'll predict my brown ribbon AND a top 45 finish.

One of those entries really is a brown ribbon.
